Brandon H Supervisor Posted September 19, 2019 Supervisor Share Posted September 19, 2019 yeah it'll require a bit more manual setup, but once done budman is right that kind of setup will work like a dream and give you WAY more flexibility and features compared to a general consumer router Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1387190-cant-ping-or-ssh-into-my-raspberry-pi/page/2/#findComment-598484071 Share on other sites
+BudMan MVC Posted September 20, 2019 MVC Share Posted September 20, 2019 Its not a heap of money if you want to actually run a real network ###### I have seen soho wifi routers close to that. here this freaking monstrosity is on sale and its 269$ Can't even do vlans - wtf??? https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-AX6000-8-Stream-Smart-Router/dp/B07L56SN8M?ref_=Oct_DotdC_954t_0_26b8b46b&pf_rd_p=7016b266-f2ff-5445-b1bf-012925862333&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-4&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=300189&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=KMT4P2VY38XFW8SY2BPD&pf_rd_r=KMT4P2VY38XFW8SY2BPD&pf_rd_p=7016b266-f2ff-5445-b1bf-012925862333 Says list is $349 And now that your broken up your gear, you can piece meal expand and upgrade.. Want a better switch - just get a better switch.. You need wifi in another area - just buy another AP.. My current network gear is this Modem - $79 (pays for itself already, since isp wanted $10 a month) SG4860 - $750 router SG300-28 $200 (2017) switch SG300-10 $190 (2014) switch UAP-AC-Pro $130 UAP-AC-LR $110 UAP-AC-Lite $90 This is the "network" gear, does not count upses, or nas and other devices.. Does not count switches on my self, or usgp3 on shelf, etc. But I got the Lite and LR free, for being part of beta program on unifi, and good poster and supporter of other members.. Wasn't really in the market when I got the 28 port switch, but price was so good couldn't pass it up.. And now its ports are pretty close to full. And prob would of went with the sg3100, but wasn't in stock when needed it.. And hey go big or go home But sure you could do it "cheaper" for sure.. Any $20 wifi router that can run 3rd party firmware could be used and prob will support vlans under 3rd party firmware be used as AP.. The switches that can do vlans can be had cheap $40 8 port gig.. And pfsense you could run any really any old hardware you have laying around... But once they know how to set up everything, it is known as an investment. I don't have the big boys like you, but I do have adequate hardware/software that works for me. +BudMan MVC Posted September 20, 2019 MVC Share Posted September 20, 2019 Yeah wouldn't expect anyone to jump on such hardware out of the gate.. Build up to it, but his is why you don't try and put everything in 1 box Mindovermaster 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1387190-cant-ping-or-ssh-into-my-raspberry-pi/page/2/#findComment-598484166 Share on other sites

The gear will be sitting in my living room, so I'll still need consider that factor too. So let me make sure I follow you. Presume I still need a modem up front too, say that netgear DM200, which would connect to the Sg1100, then the uap-ac-lite connects into the the Sg1100. All local to each other? Where and why does the cheap vlan switch come into it? I have a couple of netgear gs108uk at my disposal of that works? +BudMan MVC Posted September 20, 2019 MVC Share Posted September 20, 2019 Well the sg1100 is limited on interfaces.. If you don't need wired connections that share same vlan as wireless - then you could skip on the vlan switch. Connect your AP to port on sg1100 and do different wifi vlans. And then dumb switch could be on other port on router.. But you wouldn't be able to have wired and wireless on the same vlan without bridging in the router - which not good idea. You could put in cabinet to hide the modem, router and switch - but your AP should really be mounted where it can best cover the space you want covered. Those switches are dumb.. Can not do vlans.. Which you could get away as long as you don't want to put wired devices on multiple networks.
