my friend is having a problem with windows me

she said it all started when she tried to update directx. she said she downloaded it, installed it then restarted like it said. it then freezes at the bootup screen and won't unfreeze so she has to do system restore to go back to before she installed it. i guess the old installation of directx was corrupted or something. she also said that if she presses esc at the startup screen, it comes up with an error saying "file 1% could not upgrade to file 2%" or something like that. all she wants to do is play the sims too. :( help would be appreciated, if anyone knows what's going on. thanks.

It wasn't directx that was the problem, it's the version of Windows :p

I'd probably format and get all the upgrades right away.

Upgrade to Windows XP. Believe me if she's frustrated with Windows ME now she will never be happy with it.

Win ME was the worst O/S from Microsoft. I agree with Michael Lerner; get her to upgrade to XP home/pro, even 2000 would be better.

she doesn't have her windows me install disk, she only has the restore cd's that came with the computer.
