(help) poem :/

Hey guys,

I have to write and hand in an essay assignment on this poem tomorrow, but i don't even get the poem (well, not very clearly). can someone explain this a little bit :/

I hate poetry like that but it seems as though he/she is looking back on all the good times in life and basically just sitting and crying and missing it and wasting the rest of his/her life away.

The general gist of it seems to be 4 stages of saddness, one for the present, one for the recent past, one for the distant past, and one for the end of everything. Like bang said, it seems as though it is based around a review of ones life, the good things "sails bearing friendship" etc. and how they did not last. I believe the person who is speaking is speaking from beyond the grave.

However that is a VERY quick look at it, wouldn't go writing an essay based on my ideas :blink:
