Yahoo mail and adblockers

So my wife (for some reason) still uses Yahoo mail, and she called me today and asked me to remote into her system to see a message that she kept getting. It is from Yahoo, 'gently' asking her to whitelist the site, and if you don't you have to wait 15 seconds until you can close the pop-up. So besides the obvious (ditching Yahoo mail) is there any other way around this without buying their subscription? I figured that they have it set to detect adblocking add-ons/software, and considering that Verizon owns Yahoo now, they are not hurting for money, they just want to shove their stupid ads down the very few that still use the email.

A lot of sites do that nowadays so they can get money off their ads, and they don't want you to run an ad-blocker.

 

Does she know how to whitelist JUST Yahoo? Not just disabling it? If she uses uBlock Orgin, it is very easy to whitelist a site.

 

Secondly, why is she still on Yahoo? My mom is on there and we can't get her off either...

She must be using the Newest Yahoo mail. In the settings on that page revert back to Classic without all of the themes and should not have to whitelist the site.

 

Worked for a client just a few days ago using uBlock Origin on Chrome. Once reverted back to classic she no longer received that popup you describe for now anyways. Good Luck.

Does Yahoo! Mail have a paid option to disable advertisements?  If so, that may be an option.

I am not sure if she knows how to whitelist, and why is she still on Yahoo? I have no idea at all!

I believe that it does, but I really do not see the point in paying them, they have a horrible track record when it comes to security.

I tried to show my Mom that Gmail is a LOT like what Yahoo is. But she says she's fine with hers. So.. whatever.

I still use Yahoo mail and have only ever tried their new mail, which is total junk. Using classic Yahoo, I don't see any of that stuff, although just yesterday, I did have to refresh the news articles, to get them to show up. I do use Ublock origin. Used to like reading the comments on news articles for the laughs, but they have had those disabled for a while now. Supposed to be temporary. Figured they disabled them during the elections.

 

FWIW, Yahoo is not my main e-mail. Use it mainly for junk stuff.

She uses Gmail as well, I even tried to get her to use Thunderbird to retrieve all of her email from her various accounts, but she didn't like it, she prefers the web based interfaces.
