Got the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine

...but I received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine (healthcare worker).  I receive the second dose on January 19.

I will update if any symptoms appear.  Normally I tolerate vaccines well without having any side effects.

Will see how it goes...

Edit:  Posted the above while I was waiting during the mandatory 15 minute period (it's 30 minutes for those that have previous allergic reactions to vaccines).  I'm still alive...arm is fine.

Yesterday evening I had a very slight headache ... which could have been a coincidence but my co-worker (who also got it) also said her head hurt a little.  Today head and everything else fine ... aside from my shoulder which is a little sorer than it was yesterday.

I've heard stories for immunity after having it (covid)  ranging from 3 months to maybe a year, any word on how soon the vaccine wears out?

I think that is still up in the air since long term data hasn't been gathered.  I believe the 3 months is a "known" while upper limits are still an "unknown."

Not enough time has passed to know the answer to this.  Normally vaccines undergo far longer tests just to ascertain exactly this kind of information, but with Covid there just hasn't been the time to do that.  It's safe enough for most people, but we just don't know how long for right now.  Best guess is it'll end up being an annual shot, like the flu jab.

I am hopeful however that since the mRNA vaccines work in a completely different manner than a traditional vaccine that the immunity they kickstart will be longer lasting than the annual flu shot.

  • 4 weeks later...

Update: About 830 last night (about 12 hours after the dose)I started having a headache and an onset of cold shivers (though it wasn't cold) + joint pain.  Had some trouble sleeping due to the headache. At work now, don't have shivers or joint pain really but do have a slight headache.  Side effects are indeed worse this time around compared to the first shot.  Injection site is sore, about the same as the first time. Just waiting for the headache to go away now and hopefully the shivers/joint pain don't come back (that part sucked)....

My co-worker took the day off due to her symptoms.

@Jim KI am going Friday to get my first dose of Moderna, since FL just changed the age requirement to 40+, I had previously asked my Doctor to fill out the medical form so I could get it sooner considering I qualify on 4 of the items listed. Have you had any lingering  side effects since you posted?

Unfortunately part of the long-term efficacy also depends on what the virus population (e.g. mutants) looks like. If it's out there circulating and mutating in a large fraction of the population, then it's more likely that we'll end up with variants that overcome at least some vaccines. One advantage to the mRNA vaccine platform is that they can conceivably tweak the vaccine very quickly to restore its efficacy, so in worse-case scenarios they can at least minimize the lag between when a vaccine-resistant mutant arises vs pushing out a booster that neutralizes the new mutant.

I've been fortunate and have been able to get both doses (Moderna), and have had basically the textbook experience: just soreness from the first, and mild, 12 hours-worth of flu-like symptoms from the second. No lingering effects - after the pandemic ends, I can imagine easily forgetting that I ever got the shots.

No lingering effects....and the only real update to my last post was that I started feeling better that night and felt normal the next day.

So basically for me.

First dose:  Slight headache that evening ... sore arm.

Second dose:  Headache the evening of the first day (Tues) with occasional shivers and joint pain which persisted through the next day (Wed).  Started feeling better Wed evening and felt fine on Thurs.

    • But they will be the first asking for a bail out the moment crap goes sideways. Its just a matter of time with this AI thing unless skynet gets us first.
    • I'm so conflicted with the Google Search AI summaries. On one hand I don't like how it's harming smaller websites by greatly reducing traffic which will harm us all in the long run but on the other hand those AI summaries often give me the information I'm after. I have never once clicked on 'show me more' though and never will.
    • Not a single company as small or large it may be is obligated to subsidize its products and sell them at a loss. Your way of thinking is socialist and as a West German with a German brother state but impoverished by state dictatorship and a socialist command economy situated to the East i can tell you - this kind of thinking very quickly leads to products not being produced anymore at all. EDIT: That does not mean that I find state support for social needs unreasonable. Quite the contrary. Together with solid workers' rights we exactly had exactly that in Germany for decades in the form of the Sozialstaat which was as the scandinavian social democratic very successful - until the number of people who drew from those resources dramatically increased (ironically a project of social democrat and green proponents).
    • Apple reportedly has a second-generation iPhone Fold planned for 2027 by Hamid Ganji The iPhone Fold is one of the most anticipated tech products expected to debut this fall. It will be Apple’s first foldable iPhone, ushering in a new product category for the company. While the first generation has yet to hit the shelves, a new leak suggests Apple has already begun work on its successor. Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station claims that the second-generation iPhone Fold has already been confirmed, meaning Apple could launch a successor in fall 2027. The foldable iPhone is also reportedly referred to as the “iPhone Ultra,” though it remains unclear whether Apple will ultimately choose that branding, especially as Samsung is rumored to rename the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as the Galaxy Z Fold Ultra this year. The leaker also claims that the second-generation foldable will feature a wider folding display while reusing the same screen found in the first generation. Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.3-inch outer screen in a passport-style form factor. It has already been reported that Apple plans to change its iPhone release cycle in 2026 to spread launches throughout the year. Under this strategy, the iPhone Fold is expected to debut this fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 are expected to arrive later in 2026 or in early 2027. Speaking of the iPhone Air, Digital Chat Station says Apple remains undecided about a third-generation model. The company is reportedly waiting to see how the iPhone Air 2 performs in the market, and if sales disappoint, a successor may never materialize. As we reported this week, the iPhone Air has not been scrapped from Apple’s plans. The second-generation model is reportedly scheduled for spring 2027 and could introduce upgrades such as an additional rear camera for ultrawide photography and improved battery life.
