[RANT] DDR400+ Memory Purchases

Recommended Posts

This is really just a rant. Ok a helpful one ;)

I see this too often...

DDR400+ Memory is FOR OVERCLOCKING do not buy this memory and not overclock your system to take advantage of it.

It's come across me by many users that they go out and buy this fantastic expensive memory install it into their computers and NOT understand that it just will not run at its rated speed unless you overclock your system.

On Athlon Systems Your FSB's and on Pentium 4 ? Systems your FSB's RUN @ 200MHz!!

If you install DDR500 in your system and not adjust your FSB Clock this memory that you bought that runs @ 250MHz will only run @ 200MHz because thats the highest default rated FSB for your SYSTEM.

If you want to buy Memory thats Faster than the highest Default FSB Clock of your system you need to take understand that this memory is built for OVERCLOCKING.

Examples of this RAM are:

DDR434 (217), 467 (234), 500 (250), 550 (275), 567 (283) from Corsair, OCZ.

In order to take advantage of these high speed RAM chips at full capacity you must set your FSB to the numbers in the parenthsis corresponding to your RAM speed. This will run your Memory at its highest Rate.

Thus Not wasting your money!

If you don't want to overclock DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FASTER THAN DDR400.

Thank You! :yes::

I completly agree... nice rant btw ;)

lots of ppl go off buying a new super fast pc and they go out buying PC3500/3700 or sometimes even 4000. And when you ask them.. so you are going to do some serious overclocking.. they say like: what? overclock..noooo.. i dont want to do that.. i ask them: so why did you buy that ram? this ram they answer? oh it's fasttttttttttttt

yeah right.. fast and your cpu:ram ratio is 1:1 and the fsb is 133 or 166 :pinch:

stick to ddr400 ........ for you not overclocking guys :shifty:

My thoughts exactly.

That "faster" RAM is pointless in a non O/C rig because those high latencies for stability end up slowing the machine down. It's pretty obvious those latencies become less of a problem with an overclocked PC. People don't know these things because they don't bother to do their homework.

I don't want to O/C, so I made sure to get the best RAM for my needs: Low Latency, Unbuffered DDR-400. For my needs, a matched pair of the Corsair CMX-512LLPRO was the best choice. Good thing I bought the pair when they were on sale for $259.00.

Should work quite nicely on an Abit AN7 paired with an Athlon 3200+

    • Once the first went to a full version number, some just egregiously long numbers with every iteration of compilations/dates/times... what have you, it was a landslide. Long gone are the days of IE version 6, 7... now it's Edge 137.0.3296.16. So, why not iOS 2026.18.8778.322.10.800? Shocked that Edge isn't 2025.137.0.3296.16... seriously. When Samsung went from S10 to S11, to S20... to S21... I thought they were just doing new iterations of the same/similar models, then the next would have logically been S30/S31... but nope. Oh well... better things to think about then version numbers, leave that to the devs.
    • The problem -- as pointed to by the PowerShell output I quoted above -- was that for some reason it couldn't download the NuGet provider. Here's what did work: (1) Download the raw nupkg file (set-inetpubfolderacl.1.0.0.nupkg) from https://www.powershellgallery....s/Set-InetpubFolderAcl/1.0; (2) Extract (e.g., via 7-Zip) the Set-InetpubFolderAcl.ps1 file into C:\Program Files\WindowsPowerShell\Scripts; (3) Run the script via PowerShell as described in the quite thorough instructions given at https://www.windowslatest.com/...t-on-windows-11-windows-10/ . That worked for me, or seemed to. Oh, relief!
    • I like the show's/comic's violence being represented here, as so many others avoid it. Timing is key with this release due to the Marvel Tokon title.
