Internet via ethernet on Linksys router stopped working, but wifi works fine?

Recommended Posts

I have a Linksys AC1900 MUI-MIMO Gigabit Router (Model EA7500) that i bought a little over a year ago which started acting weird a day ago. Internet access on my desktop, which is connected via ethernet, suddenly stopped working, so I assumed my ISP was having some downtime. I waited a while then noticed my phone and Smart TV's still had internet access via WIFI (same router), while the desktop did not.

Windows is showing that its connected to the internet, the icon in the tasktray shows internet access, but still cannot access anything. I can't even access the router's admin panel via IP address. I can access it via wifi oh my phone, which does show that my desktop is connected to it.

If I remove the ethernet cable that connects my desktop to the router, the icon in the task tray changes to the not connect globe, but will change back to the Connected Internet Access icon if i connect it back, but I still can't access anything on the internet.

I have tried using different ethernet cables, which didn't resolve the issue.

I have access to the internet if i connect the main ethernet from the wall into the desktop (by passing the router), and also everything works fine using a different router.

I have factory reset the router, but the problem still persists.

Does anyone know of a way to fix this? Doesn't seem like the ethernet port on router died if the router can still detect everything connected to it via ethernet. It's just some how not letting any data get through the ethernet ports.

It's weird that WIFI works perfect and can access internet, but ethernet can't.

hope this makes sense.

thanks.

Did you try a different Ethernet port on the router?

I saw you already tried another Ethernet cable.

Did you try a USB-Ethernet adapter? It could be that your onboard nic is bad/dead.

You have another device that you can test the Ethernet cable?

My 2 cents.

If you have not done a restart on the PC try that, remember a shutdown just puts the status of the PC on the hard drive if there is any driver issues they just keep returning.

Thought that was hibernation..

Shutdown in windows 10 by default is a Shutdown hibernation hybrid ... thus the term "Fast Startup". The application level gets restarted but the system level does not. Which is why shutting down a windows 10 computer doesn't fix much.

Oh, I haven't used Windows since 7, so I'm used to calling hibration and shut down two different things. 😎

Sorry for delayed reply.

I connected it via ethernet to one of my smart tvs, tv said it was connected to internet, but couldn't access anything.

What actually is broken in the router? Is it like a hardware thing melted? Or maybe i can fix it just by flashing it some how?

before this happened, i had been disconnecting my computer from the internet by unplugged the ethernet from the router probably hundreds of times in the last month (long story, was a trick in a SINGLE PLAYER game), so maybe that is what killed it? it worked a couple of days after i last did that.

thanks

Hello,

Have you tried all of the other ports on the router, just to check?

Often when a failure like this occurs that isn't mechanical (damaged Ethernet jack), it is the PHY chip which has stopped working.  That part is typically soldered on and not user-replaceable.

I doubt it's hardware otherwise the devices wouldn't even detect the ethernet is plugged in

have you tried a factory reset on the router yet to rule out corruption in the configuration?

I've reset it multiple times, but doesn't seem to fix anything.

I also tried downgrading to previous firmware, which didn't help either.

I can actually access the router admin page from desktop, i was just trying the wrong ip addy before..

Says my computer is connected, but still can't access the internet via ethernet, but again, wifi can access the internet just fine.

I switched back to my other router, and desktop is able to access internet just fine.

Hello,

Have you tried resetting your desktop computer's network settings?  Also, if there is any VPN software, try uninstalling that.

    • To me that "Living Wage Fee" is a forced tip.  Then of course  it asks for another tip.  I'd point to that other fee, and say there is the tip.   Note:  I typically tip 25%, I'd possibly do another 7% in this situation myself.
    • NTLite 2025.06.10475 is out.
    • TF are you talking about, there's way way more work that goes into a game like The Outer Worlds 2 than Mario Kart. And like you said, you didn't play it, so your opinion is pretty much invalid here.
    • Because the food service industry has successfully lobbied the idiot US government to let them get away with paying their staff less than the legal minimum wage, which is just atrocious and sickening.  This is just another way to fleece the customer and I'm extremely sceptical that the kitchen staff see any of that additional fee revenue. Pay your f-ing staff you cheap b-stards! Everyone else does!
    • Customers are the only way restaurants make money to pay their employees.  Customers pay for the food supply... the power bill... the rent... and yes payroll.  Without customers... restaurants wouldn't have a business.   The problem here is that people get upset when they see extra fees on their bill. If a restaurant charged $16 for a cheeseburger... no one would care. But if it's broken down to $13 for the cheeseburger and $3 for the extra fee... then people get bothered.  People don't like fees... or simply the appearance of fees. It's like concert tickets.  You buy a ticket for $50 and then you must also pay $25 in fees. Why not just just charge $75 for the ticket? In the end it's the same price... but it feels different.
