I use ExpressVPN... i tried loads of other offers, before settling on ExVPN... speed is great, they dont log IP's etc... works great on all my devices. Pricing isnt too bad. there are cheaper ones out there, but i always read the fine print and reviews, especially for ip logging!

Does anyone have any experience in setting up your own VPN with recommendations for good hosts?

I use OpenVPN access server: https://openvpn.net/vpn-software-packages/ which is really easy to setup and is free for two remote connections, I then use the cheapest OVH VPS: https://www.ovhcloud.com/en-gb/vps/ to install OpenVPN on to.

Personally I think its better hosting your own VPN as you are in control of the other end.

Just to jump on the bandwagon, is there a VPN that will actually function correctly with Netflix and the likes? I've tried a couple in the past and Netflix seems to have got quite good at detecting them.

(And I've seen youtubers often use this as a selling point even when it definitely doesn't work right on a bunch of them)

Ah, now...Netflix and Amazon seem to have got really good at deciding that you're using NordVPN's VPN. I would normally just grumble and say, "well fair play" since they (Netflix and Amazon) are just trying to follow the geolocation rules imposed on them. But I spent last month in a hotel while looking for a new apartment, so naturally I had NordVPN switched on at all times because I didn't trust the connection. I still had the country set to Switzerland, I wasn't trying to get around any geo-blocking. But every 20 minutes or so Netflix and Amazon would suddenly stop and say, "err, would you mind switching your VPN off?" It didn't matter how many times I tried switching the connection, it kept happening.

I'm not quite sure how they have managed to get so good at it recently, but it's annoying...

I'm using NordVPN. No IP logging, and I've not had a problem with the speeds or reliability before.

After the NordVPN Debacle  I'm surprised anyone is touching them with a 10 foot pole.

I assume that you're referring to this? I wasn't using them then. Sounds like the issue was with a third-party server that wasn't configured correctly, and since then they have been performing security audits. The debacle seems to be in how they handled the situation when it came out, not in what actually happened.

Regardless, I'm ok with it.

when I was down in Colombia for a work trip I used ExpressVPN, it was very reliable for things like Netflix and Pandora and reasonably priced compared to many other offerings

yeah I tried several different solutions paid/free while I was down in Colombia and most wouldn't work like you state. Then I stumbled across ExpressVPN and it worked without hassle, you just pick your location and go.

Always been a Cat & Mouse game with Streaming services and VPN's.

I've used :

StrongVPN :long long time ago, it was okay, but their speeds were very poor at the time.

HideMyAss: More like Kiss My Ass!

P.I.A : Everything was okay but speeds were lacking

Cyberghost:  Good Speeds, only issue was the App only allows install on 5 devices, even if I never used them all at once. For GeoBlocking you had to pick a separate server for NetFlix and then switch server if you wanted to watch Prime.

SurfShark: Everything was awesome at first, but now they seem to be lacking when it comes to accessing international streams.  When others have fixed their workaround SS still hasn't fixed theirs.

I've been using Mullvad.  I've had no connection or speed problems.

I will second Mullvad especially if privacy is your main concern. It's about $5 a month will no account/email required and they accept numerous payment options including Bitcoin. Their software is open source, has Wireguard support, has been audited by 3rd parties, and they have a no logging policy.

OP, did you search the forums before posting this? I feel this question is asked like every other week.

    • Password Safe 3.72.0 by Razvan Serea Password Safe is a password database utility. Like many other such products, commercial and otherwise, it stores your passwords in an encrypted file, allowing you to remember only one password (the "safe combination"), instead of all the username/password combinations that you use. Once stored, your user names and passwords are just a few clicks away. Using Password Safe you can organize your passwords using your own customizable references—for example, by user ID, category, web site, or location. You can choose to store all your passwords in a single encrypted master password list (an encrypted password database), or use multiple databases to further organize your passwords (work and home, for example). And with its intuitive interface you will be up and running in minutes. PasswordSafe was originally designed by the renowned security technologist Bruce Schneier and released as a free utility application. Password Safe 3.72.0 changelog: Fixed bugs Improved font scale handling - should resolve font size issues on high resolution displays. GH1749 In the Master Password Setup window, "Show Master Password" is no longer truncated on some displays. GH1092, SF1595 Size and position of main window is now correctly restored on scaled displays. SF1630 Keep password expiry date when both password and password expiry are changed; don't clear a non-recurring expiry when the password's changed. SF1628 Custom values can now be copied to the clipboard in read-only mode via Ctrl-C and right-click->Copy Value. New features GH1196 Dark display mode support: Password Safe now supports the system display mode, as well as setting the mode directly via Manage->Options->Display->Display Mode. This change also updates the general "look & feel" of the app to the current Windows theme. Known limitations: The Date picker and keyboard shortcut controls do not switch to dark theme The Customize Toolbar dialog does not switch to dark theme Custom Field support has been added to the more advanced features: Filters XML and Text import and export Comparison, Sync and Merge databases SF938 Custom field values may now be selected by name and copied via a "Copy Custom Field Value..." submenu in the entry context popup menu. SF936 Notes and Custom fields layout now overlap, selectable by tabs, resulting in a more compact and less cluttered layout. • I've got a SoundBlasterX G6 that I use in my streaming setup. Sounds great to me and I've had zero issues with the ancient software package so far in Win11. That G6 has 7.1, Dolby, fully working SPDIF and since it's a USB device it's outside of my rig so I don't have to worry about EMF distortion. Looks like for now this is a pass for me as I think I have better hardware....
