Kvm switch advice

Recommended Posts

Looking for some advice regards an appropriate kvm type configuration for my particular needs.

My setup is as follows:

One LG 35WN75C-B 35 ultra wide monitor. The monitor has two Hdmi inputs, one display port input, and one USB C pd with alt mode.

First laptop which has combined USB C Power delivery and display port. I can use one USB C cable to connect video to my monitor which also charges my laptop too.

My peripherals are all connected to the USB 3 ports on the back of the monitor.

I have a second laptop which also has USB C, but sadly not combined power delivery and display port. So I therfore power this laptop with the standard power cable. I use an hdmi cable to transfer video from the device to the same monitor. And I also use the USB C cable to allow my peripherals which are connected to my monitor, to connect to this laptop

With both the hdmi and USB C cables connected to my monitor, I have been getting by, by using the selector switch on the monitor to switch laptop sources. I also then  swap the USB cable  C cable at the laptop side, to the second laptop when I want to use it as this allows my monitor to connect all my peripherals to this laptop when I'm using it.

Now this all works OK in practice, but I'd rather have something that allows me not to have to swap cables over etc, and with the press of a button be able to swap from one laptop to the other.

How can I achieve this without changing the wiring configuration of the first lapt

op. I.e. Single cable arrangement for power, video and peripherals.

I've looked online for suitable devices but can't find something that suits.

Any suggestions?

Hello,

This was a little hard for me to follow so I ended up drawing a diagram of what I think you are trying to accomplish.  Based on that, I think you need either a KVM which supports USB-C, or two docks for the laptops which then would plug into a KVM switch (which would not necessarily need to have USB-C, then).

Here are some USB-C switches I found:

Perhaps one of these will meet your needs.

Thanks for taking the time to think about this! In the end I decided to buy a cheap USB 3 switch. 2 pc with 4 peripherals. This allows me to share the peripherals between both devices. I've kept my usbc cable connected between device 1 and monitor and also the hdmi between device 2 and monitor. Its only a 2 button swap over now which I'm largely content with.

Thanks

    • One of my PC's is Windows 11 Home Edition... and guess what? it supports Hyper-V Disks and Containers, as well as WSL2... which these desktop tools leverage on an as-needed basis. It does not need to be enabled system-wide; it merely needs to exist. Furthermore, I tried something yesterday with Hermes Desktop and their "installer" actually builds everything from source as part of its installer toolchain! The installer (and updater as it were) both go through a roughly 19-step process to prep the system for the tool to be used -- and connectivity to local/remote models, local/remote agent configs, and other steps are not included as part of this process (those are all user config steps post-install). ALSO, the "bug wasn't confirmed to exist" is the weakest argument against a bug. That's literally every flawed product's knee-jerk reaction! Even politicians, lawmakers, murderers, and other violent criminals start with that defense... "I deny everything I'm accused of." The bug is the (shared) experience. Whether it's truly Claude Code's fault, or user error, or some other software package being the ultimate culprit, is not the point. They are experiencing unpleasant side effects and don't like that.
    • Each generaton has its exciting times and I was fortunate enough to be right there at the beginning of the PC industry.   I don't think any of us at that time realized how large it would become I still remember working on a TRS-80 with a green screen monitor that kept overheating and dying.     Also used some TRS-80 PCs with tape cartridge memory.   They worked but boy were they slow with everything being a very slow sequential read or write.  But heh, they worked though it wasn't long before they were repaced by the HDD.
    • One Drive should be a four letter word. First thing I disable on my computer. If I want to upload something to the cloud, I use a cloud base storage, NOT microsoft. Oh but what about backup. I have done backups since floppy disk eras...it just comes naturally.
    • It does just not OneCloud. 🤷🏻‍♂️
    • Claude Desktop on Linux doesn’t have ram issues. Strange. 🤷🏻‍♂️
