Windows Video Editor - Absolutely Unacceptable.

Recommended Posts

Having tried every operating system there is and owning 3 laptops, each with a different operating system, Linux, Windows and MacOS, I find it, not only unacceptable, but insulting that the built-in video editor in Windows 10/11 is such garbage, compared to the built-in versions on Linux and MacOS. MacOS’s iMovie, while is no Final Cut Pro, it provides an excellent choice of effects and settings that Windows video editor can only dream of having, while being so simple to use, your grandma can learn it in less than 10 minutes. Even Linux’s PopOS has a built-in video editor called Piviti, that puts Windows video editor to shame, not to mention Flowblade, which is another excellent and professional-looking free video editor for Linux.

Why Microsoft, after all these years, has never designed a quality, featured video editor for Windows worth using, is beyond me. Instead, we have to rely on sometimes unstable, horrible, memory-hungry and resource hogs 3rd party video editors to work with.

it is time Microsoft steps up and re-designs the Windows video editor with basic features such as output frame rate options, better effects, better transitions and more control over our workflow, something that even the totally free version of Linux has to offer.

One could make the case that an "Operating System" has no business having a built in video editor. No one wants to run an OS, they want to run their programs.

That said, most of Microsoft's built in apps are half efforts at best. I suppose they haven't messed up calculator...but whatever.

While you're not wrong that it's an utter piece of crud, I fund the term "unacceptable" a bit strong... Fine, don't accept it - all that means is that you either use Windows but not that app, or perhaps even don't use Windows.  And that's your call.

I recently tried Wondershare Filmora, and I was ready to hate it - based upon the "social media / influencer" market they seem to push themselves towards.  But that made me think - these people aren't techies and yet they are pushing out half-decent videos...

It has it's limitations, but for something that your granny could use (mine couldn't, she's dead so her videos would be dull anyway) it ticks that box :)

They start everything from scratch after it has evolved and matured. So they never get anywhere. This is Windows for a long time. Use it only as a platform and use third party apps if you don't want massive disappointment - suddenly one fine day everything is rewritten from scratch.

    • Where is the "Wow!" emoji? This'll have to do 🤩
    • I hear you on browser password manager, in my case I have two Google profiles, one was created when Google decided to grandfather us out of Workspace for Domains (with the replacement being too expensive for 25 users) resulting in my domain email address no longer being able to be registered to a new Workspace I created (for myself and another co-owner) so I could use Takeout and sync over some stuff to the new Workspace. Then I have my personal Google profile which I could be logged into on my desktop or Mobile, so I am saving passwords on one or the other, and when an URL changes another password for the same service gets added, it basically ends up being a giant mess. Unless I missed something is there a local decent password manager that can override the browser password managers for Chrome, Edge, Firefox (profiles) so that there is only one vault, and does that also support Passkeys (which to me are still confusing because sometimes it will ask for a Passkey on a phone I am no longer using!) Microsofts implementation of Passkeys is the worst!
    • It's utterly baffling that we have no idea when we'll get new features even well after they've been released. Why Microsoft thinks this is a good rollout strategy is beyond me.
    • If it makes anybody happy, others will need to be bitter about it. (apologies to Yogi Berra)
    • I owned a lot of Soundblaster cards over the years all the way back to the ISA slot era. I use a Soundblaster X3 external now because I'm able to run it through a KVM and have it follow the machine I happen to be using. It drives a set of JBL 305 powered monitors wonderfully. I'm not gaming or doing home theater through it, so rear channels aren't a consideration for me, though it does have side / rear / sub outputs.
