Multiple instances of MS Edge show up in the task manager on startup

Recommended Posts

I do not use Edge, never have opened it on this current install, yet upon startup, there is in excess of 8 instances showing running in the task manager, they stay gone when I close them, but this system is slow enough with the standard services, etc. Is there any reason for this and any method to prevent it?

Hello,

Try opening Microsoft Edge and then going to edge://settings/system in the address bar.  This should bring you to the System and performance section of that browser's settings.  At the top of the window are options called Startup boost and Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.   Try setting each of these option to Disabled and then close Microsoft Edge.

Now restart the computer as you normally would.  Does Microsoft Edge still continue to run when the computer starts up?

Probably, because Webview 2 powers the widgets like the weather/news thing.

So I just booted up this morning and there is 6 processes of Edge running, which is down from where it was before, but it is still loading.

I any using Openshell, and have all the widgets disabled, never did like them. Is it possible that they are still loading in the background?

Task Manager > Startup > right click Microsoft Edge and click disable

Just did a trial run and I didn't have any Microsoft Edge's on reboot.

Disabling widgets merely hides them. It doesn’t disable them from running. You can uninstall them with winget though.

    • SMPlayer 25.6.0 by Razvan Serea SMPlayer intends to be a complete front-end for MPV/MPlayer , from basic features like playing videos, DVDs, and VCDs to more advanced features like support for MPlayer filters and more. One of the most interesting features of SMPlayer: it remembers the settings of all files you play. So you start to watch a movie but you have to leave... don't worry, when you open that movie again it will resume at the same point you left it, and with the same settings: audio track, subtitles, volume... Other additional interesting features: Configurable subtitles. You can choose font and size, and even colors for the subtitles. Audio track switching. You can choose the audio track you want to listen. Works with avi and mkv. And of course with DVDs. Seeking by mouse wheel. You can use your mouse wheel to go forward or backward in the video. Video equalizer, allows you to adjust the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and gamma of the video image. Multiple speed playback. You can play at 2X, 4X... and even in slow motion. Filters. Several filters are available: deinterlace, postprocessing, denoise... and even a karaoke filter (voice removal). Audio and subtitles delay adjustment. Allows you to sync audio and subtitles. Advanced options, such as selecting a demuxer or video & audio codecs. Playlist. Allows you to enqueue several files to be played one after each other. Autorepeat and shuffle supported too. Preferences dialog. You can easily configure every option of SMPlayer by using a nice preferences dialog. Possibility to search automatically for subtitles in opensubtitles.org. Translations: currently SMPlayer is translated into more than 20 languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Russian, Chinese, Japanese.... It's multiplatform. Binaries available for Windows and Linux. SMPlayer is under the GPL license. SMPlayer 25.6.0 changelog: Fix play/pause button. Some fixes to stop the screensaver on Linux. Fixed some issues related to disc playback. Various bug fixes and stability improvements. • Mozilla never had the funding resources to promote their stuff the way Microsoft and Google do. As simple as 1-2-3.
    • ...Microsoft says that Edge is better for your Windows PC than Google's Chrome, as it is a "Microsoft product" that "integrates closely with Microsoft Windows," which helps with "performance benefits."... Yeah, right! Microsoft is still trying hard to convince everyone about everything it makes...
    • This is the curse of Linux on the desktop, the development and maintenance manpower is spread out across countless distributions. The same thing has to be integrated many times.
