Activating After Hardware Change

Recommended Posts

Just bought new a new PC... well, the components and out it all together.

Old PC had Windows 11 on it, which was Windows 10, which came from genuine Windows 7.

I'd signed in with my Microsoft Account all the way and I'm 99% certain the last one said it had activated with a digital licence.

Installed Windows 11 on new PC and signed in with my account but 2 hours later, still says it isn't activated. Tried the Windows 7 key but it said it wasn't valid.

Should I just wait and see?

I think it activated after a day or two last time, I can't remember.

You should call Microsoft to activate, it will be an option when you try to activate and it fails. Just tell them that you have replaced the PC that the original licence came with and they will activate it. (it might even be an automated call). It has been a long time since I did it, but it will work. If you speak with someone, be sure to tell them that the old PC is no longer in use with the license,

The other trick is with self build, even if you replace the motherboard and CPU, the licence will be able to identify other hardware that you had, this is how I was able to transfer my license in 2019 when I did a new build. I was not required to contact Microsoft, it activated on the new build because I guess I had enough hardware from the old build transferred over, like a GPU and SSDs and DDR4 memory.

Ended up being directed to a website with some details of my MS account.

There was an option to say "I installed new hardware" and I had to tick my old PC details but then it's activated fine.

Guess the old details will be overwritten.

But I spend a fair bit on this new PC so hopefully won't need to go through this again for 5+ years.

ah so that's how it's done now, good to know

I'm pretty sure they retired the automated phone system that Steve mentioned back when 10 came out so wasn't sure how this type of reactivation worked now.

    • One reason it might be running hotter is dust build up within the cooling or perhaps the paste has dried out. You could always try repasting your old GPU and cleaning the cooler. Your experience in Linux will be much better with an AMD GPU; the performance in gaming is much closer to Windows than nVidia would be. I personally think on Windows, AMD drivers are junk.
    • I reviewed it back in March, but I didn't have a 5070 at the time https://www.neowin.net/reviews/amd-rx-9070-review-vs-rtx-5070-4070-and-rx-9070-xt-7800-xt--just-good-enough/ When I reviewed the 9070 I did have a 5070 to compare it against, so the scores are there for the 9070 XT. it outperforms the 5070 in raster, and is barely neck and neck in Ray Tracing. So it's better than a 5070 in everything but Ray Tracing where it is neck and neck, or just under. To be honest, the uplift from 3080 when it was new to the 9070 XT is not as great a step up. If you can find a used 4080 Super for around the same money, you would probably be better off, but if you only want to buy new then the 16GB 9070 XT is the best value for money in its category.
    • I really hope the author's health is ok. Squirreling away a official backup of this software. Looks like the internet archive already cached a copy as well - https://web.archive.org/web/20...ldbit-soft.fi/software.html
    • AMD is supported out of the box in linux because of their open source driver. Nvidia does not. All my systems are amd and all of them work nicely on linux arch without doing anything.
    • Never had a problem with TPM and started using that many years ago in Win10. Through several motherboards and OS versions, it just does what it does without complaint. My games library doesn't even know it's there. Secure boot does a lot more than support anti-cheat, as it came along long before anti-cheat software. I've used it religiously since before I started using TPM, and I always liked it for being able to nullify virus contagions that try their best to come in underneath the firmware during boot, so that the OS doesn't see them, etc. That is its purpose, imo. I'll never understand why people who elect to use another OS feel compelled to run down Windows... I guess they need to do that to feel secure about their choices? I run Windows because it supports all the software (including games) natively that I want to buy, and I've never had to run down another OS to make me feel better about it. (Although it's certainly possible to do that, of course...) Win10 is on a ventilator atm, and Win11 is very close to being free, and I finally got to stop running StartAllBack as I moved to the Experimental/Dev channel and my 26300.8553 build supports the moveable taskbar and it's running fine at the top of the screen! Finally, my last major dislike of Win11 is being rectified! So, I'm not at all surprised to see Win11's share of the Steam survey hitting 70%.
