This from Wil Weaton (@wilw) on counter.social

I've been on Twitter since the beginning, and I've watched it turn into a cesspool of hate, propaganda, abuse, and bigotry. They can save it, but their failed leadership refuses to act. So I've looked for lots of alternatives, and counter.social is the first one I'm actually optimistic about. Thank you, @th3j35t3r for building this.

You cant directly link to a post unless the person allows it. I have been a member of counter.social since April and its nice. I have seen a bot.

Personally I am going to keep using twitter till it shuts down, censors too much (saudi arabia is a major investor) or just get tired of it.

I've been looking at Tribel but I've used counter.social.  My problem with counter.social is the guy who runs it is a but....nuts.  I respect his work but I don't want someone running a platform who just snaps randomly.

I just want a platform that grows big and doesn't have to appease right wingers about bans over trump misinformation or vaccine fud.

Nothing has changed on Twitter other than the owner as of right now.  I don't know why you would quit right now unless your reason was you hate Elon Musk?  There is no policy that has changed yet one way or the other, so anyone saying they don't like the new platform is full of it and quitting for attention.   If you wait a few months and then make your decision, it would make more sense to me.

He's been saying what he plans to do and how he's already been behaving has rapidly caused a down turn in basic civility and critical thinking.  The idiots got even prouder on Friday and hate speech went through the roof.  Elon's priority seems to be Vine and bringing back trump..

Be smarter and don't fall for the crap you are being force fed.  If you look for the wackos, you will find them.  I haven't seen a bit of change and Musk has said no policies have changed yet.  If you are seeing hate, then you are following the wrong things.

FWIW Trump said he isn't interested in coming back (that might change if his version of Twitter fails).  Just don't follow people if you don't like them.

I honestly don't know who she is. Never heard of her but I will say I miss the Internet era of 2000 - 2007. When the Internet wasn't an infested bile of social media where so many want to rip your throats out literally.

The days before smart phones ruled people's lives.

Remember those days things weren't as serious and personal nor were people as intrenched as they are today. Even so many forums nowadays there's almost no difference now between the tone and hostility of forums and social media sites because they've transferred their intolerance and hostility across every platform. The days when people could take jokes, shrug it off, laugh it off, move on with whatever it was. Or even saying, well we'll agree to disagree.

There's a mob mentally that runs through everything nowadays.

Now todays Internet era they want to destroy you. For what? Just so they can feel good about themselves or scoring virtual points behind their screens? Look how politicised everything is nowadays. There was a time to a degree I remember most didn't like to show their politics because most knew how toxic it is. Now they flaunt it like it's a promotion. A badge, an honour. The Internet wasn't perfect in the 2000s but it sure wasn't a crap fest that it has turned into today as you're now seeing the same rudeness, hostility and intolerance creeping through everything in real life as well with it.

Internet forums, including Neowin right here, were full of toxic politics even before social media became a big thing.

As far as I see it, social media just put this more front and center to our national political debate. So, when it was confined to forum discussions, you could dismiss it and say "those are just internet arguments" and go on with your life. With social media, celebrities, politicians, journalists, and big corporations started participating in and pandering to "internet arguments."

Musk does not believe in free speech, especially if you dare criticize him or his companies.  He'll fire you if you work for him, hire detectives to investigate you, call you a pedo if you show him up in public, take away things you've paid for, anything just to shut you up and take away your free speech.  Don't believe me? Try doing 5 mins of research or just watch Blunty talking about it...

Again... Musk does NOT believe in free speech, at all.

I don't understand why anyone cares what celebrities think, but you are right that it just feeds the BS stream and gives people something to disuss (or mostly bitch and whine).  I am in wait and see mode and see what happens.  IMO it couldn't get any worse than it was.

Ehh, IMO it all ends up as one massive echo chamber, never even bothered to have a twitter account and still won't.....

*granted the FB fact checking is fun (ya we know there is no McD's on mars....an no that 1960's movie clip that used the word vaccine is not talking about covid...., 😂)

Yeah but the nice thing about forums is that we can require the discussions go in their own separate forum so that people can choose if they want to be part of the discussion. We've even built filters to stop the topics from appearing in the activity tickers on the MiniSpy and main page (according to your own filtering settings).

Granted you can also filter words and accounts in your Twitter feed, but that is an all or nothing solution whereas with Neowin (forums in general) you can always choose to view and participate regardless of your settings.

Social media in that sense is far easier to create an echo chamber when you can block accounts and filter words from ever appearing.

Thing is, back then it looked pretty mild compared to today. Now it's so toxic people don't even discuss anymore. They berate until it gets to the point it becomes so personal that real life threats has occurred for joe nobody over the Internet. The Internet definitely is no longer the place I used to enjoy back in the 2000s. I honestly never thought I'd see the day I almost hate todays Internet culture. It truly is a complete cesspit across the board and I thought it was such a great and exciting place during the 2000s and thinking beyond of what was to come. Yes there are still good things but the bad greatly outweighs the good now.

The debate part is only a world today. Today it's personal vendettas. Look how it doesn't take much to whip up a storm just having a different point of view from the mob. Even the Internet creator said it wasn't supposed to be like this.

The Internet wasn't supposed to be a weapon to assassinate somebody's character, or destroy their career or potential career for having a wrong opinion. Right or wrong. Look at the mob mentality that happens out there. You'd never see that in person but they have no issue doing it behind screens to gain traction.

Some people in large numbers hate one another so much today that they would like to stone them. What happened to the days when you didn't like someone, you ignored them and moved on. That really doesn't happen often today. The school playground behaviour is world wide now. Which is really sad.

Why should we believe this guy?

You have to ask the question; can you verify what his claims are by doing a Google search?

Just by Musks actions on Twitter where he has blocked people for various reasons is the purest sign he's is not for free speech.  Anyone on various social media sites that have blocking capabilities, and uses them all the long crying about free speech is an oxymoron.  If you are for free speech and block people, you are not for free speech.

Because:

1. He's not the only one saying it

2. EVERYTHING he says about Musk, EVERYTHING, is fully documented, especially the COURT documents regarding his union busting activities where he was found guilty of 12 violations of labour laws when he sabotaged employee attempts to unionize.

3. Musk is a very well know liar.  Literally everything that falls out of his mouth is bull poop. Full self Driving? Promised for 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and so on... Landing on Mars? Again he promises "next year" for every year, ad infinitum... As he lies about ALL his other products, why should anyone believe him about his newest product?

4. If you're not saying nice things about him, he's a vindictive a-hole who will find some way of hurting you.  He even did it to Rich Rebuilds YouTube channel and took away all his referral vouchers for the "upcoming" Roadster just because he was showing people how to fix their Tesla's... This guy has helped sell literally 1000's of Tesla's, but because he also helps folks fix their cars, it's "No referral bonus for you!"

If I don't like a TV channel, I don't watch it, etc.

Well, blocking people that have an opposite opinion eventually has an effect of creating an echo chamber, at a certain point all you will ever see are people who agree with you. :)

Sure, but after a while it can get annoying.  I'm sure it was more than just disagreeing.  You can listen to them, but when it becomes shouting and insults, it is different.  At some point it does no good, so why listen to something you don't believe in? If I don't like someone I am not going to hang out with them.

This thread is an echo chamber against Elon Musk if you really look at it.  I don't know him and nobody on this thread knows him, or his intentions so I will give him the benefit of the doubt.  He can't do any worse with Twitter in my opinion.

Just because no-one appears to be defending him doesn't make it an echo chamber, for that we'd have to be actively blocking such posts and we aren't.

Maybe the majority of people in this thread think he's a spoiled man-child who sees people as fair game, only if, and so long he is master of the house (Twitter in this case). IDK, I personally don't think he is a good role model for young people, the opposite actually.

His public persona screams narcissism and people can spot that a mile away and call him out on it.

He might turn Twitter around or burn it to the ground.  Only time will tell.

Him and about every other rich person with a lot of influence unfortunately.  I personally don't see anything wrong with blocking people that are a PIA to you.  They are still free to say all they want, but you don't have to listen.

Hopefully he turns Twitter around, but if it folds up it isn't going to affect my life any.

When has Trump ever been honest about anything?  It's ridiculous to think he won't come back for the attention he craves.

As for force fed? What?  Every credible news outlet is quoting elon himself and has insider sources.  That's their job.  They could turn out to be wrong but so far nothing leaking about him has been wrong over the years.  That also includes his being a white supremacist.  He made his views clear on that one.

    • Windows 10 quietly gets one more year of support and updates by Taras Buria Windows 10 reached its end of life at the end of 2025. Microsoft kicked off the Extended Security Updates program, aimed at giving regular consumers one more year of security-only updates. By doing so, Microsoft gave users more time and money to update their computers to a newer operating system or compatible hardware. Now, with the end of the Extended Security Updates program quickly approaching, Microsoft is making an important adjustment. Users discovered that the official support article for the program now lists a new end-of-support date: The Extended Security Updates program is not a new concept. It has been an official way for business consumers to continue receiving critical updates for unsupported Microsoft products for many years. However, all this time, it was a business-only, paid feature. With Windows 10, Microsoft brought ESU to regular consumers, allowing them to get security updates for Windows 10 past October 2025 essentially for free. When Windows 10 was approaching the end of support, many guessed that Microsoft might adjust its support timelines, and this is exactly what seems to be happening. Of course, Microsoft would love everyone to switch to new computers, such as its latest Surface devices, but in the days of ever-growing hardware prices, not everyone is lucky enough to have money for a new PC. Leaving hundreds of millions of customers with a Windows version that no longer receives security updates is a major risk that Microsoft is not willing to take. If you have a Windows 10 PC to enroll in the Extended Security Updates program, check out this guide to learn how to do so.
    • Sony announces Bungie layoffs that will affect "significant number of employees" by Pulasthi Ariyasinghe Sony today announced that major layoffs are happening at its first-party studio Bungie, the developer that has spawned series like Halo, Destiny, and Marathon over the past decades. The news arrives just weeks after Bungie delivered the final update to Destiny 2, and it's that team being hit with the layoffs the most. CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Hermen Hulst revealed the staff reduction today, calling it "painful news." "Over the past several months, together with Bungie leadership, we reviewed the studio’s long-term direction, development priorities, resource needs, and role within our broader portfolio strategy," said Hulst, explaining the decision. "We explored multiple alternatives before concluding that a reduction was necessary to align the studio’s resources with its current priorities and long-term goals." The layoffs will be hitting "a significant number of employees" across most of the Destiny franchise development team. It doesn't look like Sony is planning to continue the series following Destiny 2's sunsetting update. The studio is said to be in early stages of looking at other projects to pivot to, but it's said that keeping the size of the team at current levels is no longer feasible. "We know this decision has a profound impact on the people affected, their families, friends, and teammates," said Bungie leadership in a separate message on social media. "While these changes are necessary to best position the studio now and for the future, that does not lessen the difficulty of this moment or the impact it has on those affected." At the same time, "some" of the Marathon development team are also affected by the layoffs. The recently released multiplayer-only extraction shooter title hasn't seen a big boom of players either, but the company is reportedly hoping that the live service experience will pick up players with future updates.
    • Microsoft adds reusable skills and finance data connectors to Copilot in Excel by Karthik Mudaliar Microsoft is giving Copilot in Excel a collection of new features aimed squarely at finance teams. The update introduces reusable instructions for common tasks, connections to services such as FactSet and Morningstar, and a better way to review what Copilot intends to do before it starts changing a workbook. The most interesting addition is 'Skills' finally coming to Copilot in Excel. Skills let companies teach Copilot how to handle a recurring process, so employees do not need to write the same detailed prompt every month. Users can create skills that can specify the steps Copilot should follow, along with the required layout, formulas, and formatting. Microsoft says users can create their own skills by saving a SKILL.md file in OneDrive. The file is written using Markdown and tells Copilot when and how to perform the task. Once it is available, a user can select the skill in the Copilot pane or mention it in a prompt using the @ symbol. There is also a library of prebuilt finance skills for customers who do not want to create their own. Microsoft plans to let developers distribute additional skills through the Microsoft Marketplace and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, with LSEG, Ramp, Rogo, samaya.ai, Velixo, and Vena among the first partners involved. The company says that it is also expanding the external data that Copilot can access from inside Excel. New connectors are being added for CB Insights, Daloopa, FactSet, Morningstar, PitchBook, and S&P Global data through technology developed by Kensho. There is a catch, however. Accessing these services may require a separate subscription from the relevant data provider, so a Microsoft 365 Copilot licence will not necessarily unlock all of them. FactSet is also only available in preview for now, with general availability planned for July. Microsoft is also trying to make Copilot’s workbook edits easier to inspect. Users can switch to a planning mode that shows which sheets, cell ranges, formulas, and assumptions Copilot intends to work with before it begins making changes. Once the work is complete, the Show Changes pane can distinguish edits made by Copilot from those made by human collaborators. The update continues Microsoft’s push to turn Excel Copilot from a chatbot into an agent that can carry out longer tasks. The company previously added an Agent Mode capable of planning and completing multi-step Excel work. Microsoft also recently acquired financial AI startup Fintool, another indication that finance is becoming a key target for its Excel AI strategy. Prebuilt skills, personalization, workbook rules, external connectors, planning mode, and Copilot attribution in Show Changes are generally available to Microsoft 365 Copilot customers using Excel on the web, Windows, and macOS. Custom skills are initially available to Microsoft 365 Insiders on Windows and Mac starting today. Microsoft plans to make them generally available across Windows, Mac, and the web over the next month. Partner-built skills are expected during the third quarter of the year. Availability may still differ depending on region and licensing.
