How to remove a persistent element from Reddit? I got banned.

Question

Hi OK I will just come right out and say it. I got banned on Reddit. I'm not going to complain about it, other than to say that it was for the dumbest reason. A Spanish military trainer was shouting at a raw Ukrainian military recruit on a training field in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish so I took a rough stab (from my own days in basic training) at what the trainer might have been saying. There may have been some profanity in my interpretation, as you might expect in this kind of military setting. I thought nothing of it. I'm an adult after all and I assumed others who might read the comment were adults. Anyway I went to sleep blissfully unaware of any potential problems as, I truly did not feel I had said anything at all out of place. However to my considerable surprise, when waking up next morning and visiting reddit, I found that I had been banned 'for threatening and violent behaviour!' To be very clear the video I commented on was of a soldier on a firing range firing a gun at an inanimate target. The commander/trainer was screaming at the recruit (as commanders do) in what I assumed was very colourful language, so I left a comment along the lines of "Come on! What are you? Some kind of p*ssy? Kill him!'  But in all seriousness the thing the recruit was shooting at was just a wooden target.

So I have yet to figure out how it is possible to be banned from a web site, for threatening an inanimate object, lol.

In any case I have concluded from this that it is literally impossible (even after 14 years and a very high Karma count), to know what Reddit admins might ban you for. So even if I could do it, there is no point in risking commenting at all there, because you could be banned at any time for a completely random thing. Nevertheless Reddit remains (for better or for worse) an important news amalgamation site for many significant events in the world - and there is little else I am aware of so far that can rival it.

So I can live with the ban (not that I have a choice anyway), but what I can't live with is the stupid banner at the top of every page that reminds me I have been banned. I've tried ublock Origin's element picker, Nuke this (Firefox extension) and a bunch of other stuff too. But I can't get rid of it.

Can anyone here please help me to just get rid of this stupid banner?

I've attached a copy of this here.

Yes Ublock origin element picker and Nuke Anything Element blocker don't work. Nor do any of the privacy extensions mentioned here that are designed to block ads work either. I assume that is because they are designed to block ads and not a persistent banner like this.

Remembering the 30+ subs I am subscribed to either is an issue, I'm 56 years old. I can barely remember my age most days, lol, so I won't be able to remember all my favourite subs. If you're subscribed to a topic, posts from that sub will appear on your front page. That's how this web site works. So logging out and browsing while logged out isn't such a hot option.

I know people who get booted from web sites might complain about the injustice of it all. But really in my case it's deeply unjust. How can someone be accused of violent behaviour towards a cardboard cut out target? Lol. I am also autistic. Reddit was one of my (very) few social outlets for the last 14 years that let me connect to other people. Mods there have no consideration for the emotional and psychological damage their actions can have.

It blocks trackers from identifying you. It’s useful in circumventing the ban

As said by literally every person on the receiving end of moderation

Many members are banned unfairly. Neuro-diverse members are often marginalised by being accused of being trolls.

Members going against group-think are often accused of being trolls. Members instigating the pissing match may be left off lightly when the moderators agree with them and another member responding to the insults is punished. Sometimes in fact it’s the moderator initiating the insults, believe it or not. But hey, let’s place the blame on the member we dislike says the admin.

More common than you think.

No, I’ve encountered many unfair situations on forums. Such is life. I try to move on. However I imagine that reddit is more addictive than a forum that’s not particularly active.

I think that everyone cries and moans after moderation. You have presented what you deem to be your side of the events, but I don’t care - their moderation is their business. I do think though, that you’ve come here trying to circumvent their features that help them maintain their moderation - so I do have an opinion of you.

There is always 2 sides to a story.

What they may see as trolling, the member may see as discrimination. They mentioned autism. Which I have knowledge of. You could say the admin is trying to circumvent the law in this instance :)

I'm glad you feel so certain in your view of me. I agree that the subject matter of the ban seems incredulous, unbelievable and difficult to comprehend. It is all of those things. But what you don't get (and what you probably don't care about) is that this site formed a very large part of my daily life for over 14 years. I'm a 56 year old guy ffs! I am entitled to have my views as much as anyone else. But what isn't reasonable is to be subjected to the whims of some teenage dork who can't take a bit of bog standard banter and who feels at liberty to restrict the views and rights of others to have a say based on some inexplicable whim or other. I have told you how this situation came about. I have nothing invested in hoping to make you believe me. But for sure things like this in situations like mine can have a deeply detrimental impact on the wellbeing and mental health of people who rely on resources like this as their only social outlet - for reasons you have no need to know and will almost certainly not understand and not care about. But since you don't care about me, or this issue and have no connection with me, or that site, I do feel there is little to be gained from your continued commentary. You know nothing my friend. Less than nothing indeed. So if you can't help I invite you to go and find someone else to make feel small and miserable.

There was once a time when Neowin filled this role too. Many years ago. But now it is mainly only frequented by old timers like me (and given your join date) probably you too. What web based resource would you deeply lament loosing if you could no longer access it?

I found another alternative: you can follow subreddits using RSS. This has the advantage of having your RSS client act as a sort of Front Page with all your subreddits in one place. And online readers like Feedly or Inoreader have mobile apps too.

I'm not sure getting banned from Reddit is a bad thing. Other than some forums like Neowin, I steer clear of social media. Its the toxic mold of the internet. Joined Reddit a few months ago after running across some retrogaming channels. Can't really say its done much for my life other than distracting me. Always coming across smug, arrogant people. Actually got angry one day reading some BS. Deleted reddit off my phone. I'm just not a social kinda guy.

I'm not certain of it - it's only based upon all you've posted here.

Why did you choose to put it at risk then?

Totally.  Not entitled to have a 3rd party host them without moderation though.

This sentence says more of you than of anyone or anything else.

I wouldn't get myself banned from a site I had such a need for.

Well go you! You are obviously an angel who has never put a foot wrong, or been excluded from anything in your life before, either rightfully or wrongfully. You would be right at home on Reddit with all the other judgmental types there. Dude as much as you seem to get off on trying to make me feel worse, you really know nothing. I said very clearly how this situation came about. I couldn't care less whether you believe me or not. I didn't read your full response. I have more constructive ways to spend my time.

I'm not sure where I said that - please quote me to remind me.  I have been banned from... in fairness zero websites.  But if I were - I'd not be moaning and talking about my "entitlement" on another site - that's kinda lame really.

I was once asked to not go back to a theme park for telling Mother Goose to go f**k herself, if that counts.  Not sure of the relevancy, but hey...

Wait, the site you have "invested years" in - you now lambast?  So you do or do not want back in?  Weird...

I couldn't give two shiny s***s how you feel.  I'm commenting on the weirdness of this entire thread, where you have got yourself banned from a site and now want Neowin users to help you bypass their processes.

thread closed

Okay Okay, closing this thread before things devolve further.

Jebus197 I understand you were simply trying to hide the banner stating you are banned however it seems like Reddit does not make that an easy task. If the usual methods of using the element hider in uBlock Origin and such don't work then it may just be something you'll have to put up with until if/when you are able to get appealed.

This topic is now closed to further replies.

Sandboxie allows you to run your browser, or any other program, so that all changes that result from the usage are kept in a sandbox environment, which can then be deleted later. Sandboxie is a sandbox-based isolation software for 32- and 64-bit Windows NT-based operating systems. It is being developed by David Xanatos since it became open source, before that it was developed by Sophos (which acquired it from Invincea, which acquired it earlier from the original author Ronen Tzur). It creates a sandbox-like isolated operating environment in which applications can be run or installed without permanently modifying the local or mapped drive. An isolated virtual environment allows controlled testing of untrusted programs and web surfing. Sandboxie is available in two flavors Plus and Classic. Both have the same core components, this means they have the same level of security and compatibility. What's different is the user interface the Plus build has a modern Qt based UI which supports all new features that have been added since the project went open source. The Classic build has the old no longer developed MFC based UI, hence it lacks support for modern features, these features can however still be used when manually configured in the Sandboxie.ini. • Hello, Christian Maas' XVI32 is a nice (and very small) hex editor. Speaking of hex editors, many years ago a colleague and I who both worked at Tribal Voice managed to edit a copy of the company's PowWow instant messaging client to make it behave better now that all of its lookup servers and other server-side tech was gone.  The program didn't support NAT (RFC-3022 was introduced in January 2001, the same time Tribal Voice was shuttered), but it still worked okay if you manually set up port-forwarding on your router.  The server at http://powwow.jazy.net/ hosts a copy (usual warnings about downloading and running untrusted code from random internet servers apply). I occasionally use some tools like Funduc Software's Search and Replace and Application Mover when I need to make mass-edits to text-based files or move programs with a hard-coded installation directories, respectively.  When I need to figure out the exact LCD panel inside of a laptop, EnTech Taiwan's Monitor Asset Manager is my go-to tool for that purpose. JD Design's website (now hosted on github.io) has a number of interesting freeware and shareware utilities.  I used to use their TouchPro utility to set the file timestamps on software I was mastering to match its version number (e.g., version 3.00 of a program had all of its files dates set to 3:00AM, and so forth). Karenware has a number of interesting freeware utilities, too. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
    • I still use HexChat! Not really as ancient as the 1994 AutoCAD above my post, but I have never found anything better to replace it. Yes we still operate an IRC server https://www.neowin.net/irc/ 😛
    • At work we still have a couple of people that use a version of AutoCAD LT purchased in 1994. This predates Windows 95 and works fine on versions of Windows up to XP. Its long since run in an locked down isolated XP VM, accessible via RDP. I did install LibreCAD for them, however they said it was just too different to get to grips with. In all fairness one of them is now 75 and the other is almost 60.
