linux (& winxp boot) troubles!!!

1st trouble...

i have win xp (corp), then i installed linux mandrake 8. linux makes me lilo loader, where i can select some stuff:

- windows

- linux

- flopy

...

-- everything works fine, when i type "linux", but when i type "windows" i just hear my speak making some scratch noise, then everything stops.

-- but now hear this: if i make in bios "1st device to boot: CDROM" it works fine, if i select "windows".. can someone explain? any clues?

2nd trouble

in mandrake control panel i set:

--- when log in, auto run KDE (worked fine)

--- when log in, auto run GNOME (worked fine)

--- when log in, auto run SOME_THIRD_THING_DUNNO_NAME - restarted.. then just my background color shows up (nothing else!!!). i tried again next time, and it didn't do that thing.. just returned the text,

that i must delete some file like "/tmp/.X0-???..." but i don't know what's the command

3rd trouble

How can i now set to auto run KDE in text view (non graphical.. i don't know how is it called)-... is there any file, i must edit?

4th trouble

My ISDN Adapter (asus) doesn't work under mandrake, but when linux is loading.. it detects him, then do some tests and write failed... help???

I would recommend you use loadlin, it allow you to boot into linux from command prompt. That way, you can have your masterboot record undisturbed. To do that you'll need a kernel image file. If you use Redhat-base distribution such as Mandrake, or SuSE, the image will be in /boot and the file is called 'vmlinuz' or 'bzimage'. If you're using Slackware, it's on /

the file is called 'vmlinuz' just mount in your dos partition can copy it to your dos partition.. To mount it, you can do by

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos

I assume that you put your windows on a harddisk as MASTER and is on IDE1. HD = Hard disk, A = MASTER, 1 = IDE1.

/mnt/dos is where hd will be mounted to, you may change it as you like, or if it doesn't already exist you can make one by 'mkdir '

The third party GUI that you set might need you to execute some command so that it can create a profile for you and then let you run the GUI. I can't help you on this one unless you let me know what are you trying to boot to.

You mean you want to boot into text mode instead of graphic mode right? You must change the runlevel, I've been away from Linux for awile now, I can't remember exactly how to do that, but it's fairly easy and wouldn't take for than 3 secs to do it ;) I'll look around and tell you how it can be done.. :p

LORDGreg, post your lilo.conf file and I will help you configure it. It should be under the /etc directory.
