Neowin main page uses over 1.5 GB of ram, why?

Fair enough.

Steven did mention a few days ago that around 50% of site visitors block ads. I realize you don't but I had no idea it would be that many.

Monetising websites is a tricky proposition at the best of times... People are used to stuff being free so it's hard to get them to go for paid subs... Honestly, if it were say $19.99 a year for a level 2, I'd sub up as that seems a far more reasonable amount to me, hence me saying I think they might get more takers if it were cheaper... $28 is a weird number that's too close to $30, which is expensive.  Maybe if they could separate it to add free forum for a lower price, but keep ads on the main page?  Also, I never ever use the deals links, they're almost exclusively American only anyway...

Anyway, this is probably the wrong place for this discussion, apologies to the OP and mods for side-tracking it.

I just looked at the pricing.  That's more than a streaming service.

Have you ever been called a tight ass, a cheap skate, a skinflint or a mercenary sod?

Given how much time I spend here (I never close my browser so just leave the site open), maybe they get more out of me for ad revenue? ;)

You answered your own question, you admitted that we probably get more ad revenue out of you than we could recoup from a yearly $28 subscription. So with that said, I really appreciate that you whitelist Neowin :)

What streaming service do you use that's less than $28 a year?

Our monthly running costs are in the five figures, and that is without expensive U.S. based journalists (which we can no longer afford).

It's always comical to read how people expect everything to be free, when the reality of the situation is exactly the opposite.

Y'know, I was thinking about this last night and I decided to renew my sub (because I can't turn off the adblocker when I'm on my work machine) BUT, for tier one, so you get $14 from me AND the ad revenue! :p

I still think you might get more subs with a lower tier 2 price though. ;)

I hear you on the tier 2 price, but it has actually been that way for almost 20 years, difference is that we actually haven't raised it...

I just look at all the other sites that have folded or have been taken over by Venture Capitalist's, (with people claiming "had I known, I would have done more" ya right lol)  it's a wonder we're still around really!

No it's not? I'm paying about £20 per month for my Netflix subscription. A Neowin subscription is either $14 or $28 per year.

Neowin is way less expensive than Ars or Thurrott for example.

Ars is excellent imo but Thurrott uses a ridiculous moderation filter. It's comment section is a joke.

Your subscription cost is very reasonable PLUS you offer forums that allow robust discussion.

For me personally, Neowin sub and YouTube Premium, given l use YT Music as my music streaming service, are my two no brainer subscriptions.

While this is true, if I paid $2.33 a month to every site I use, that'd be more than I pay for my broadband.

You've cherry picked one sentence out of my reply.

You have left out the overall context of the value FFM gets from Neowin.

Obviously, l wasn't suggesting we pay for every site we visit.

    • I'm still rocking iOS 25.x on my primary phone cuz iOS 26 still has usability quirks (mostly aesthetic and thus its UX) which I don't wanna deal with -- and I've been piloting them with all of these updates on my backup phone, so I'm well aware of its "improvements" since iOS 26 was first released (compared to version 26.5.x).
