Dell data management software causing 93%-100% memory usage on computers

Question

Recently, I've seen Dell computers using 93% or, in some cases, 100% of their memory.

The culprit is preinstalled Dell software, more specifically, I think it's Dell support assist.

The problem child exe is located in c:\program files\dell\dtp

I knew it was this issue, yet none of the processes showed a large amount of memory usage. So I whipped out "RamMap"

As you can see, the Dell database file uses up a lot of RAM.

so the problem child process is Dell data management. It might be part of Dell support assist

After killing all Dell processes from the task manager, especially Dell data management, the RAM usage went from 93% to 45%.

When I tried to uninstall Dell support assist, it just sat there and would never uninstall. The uninstall box would go away at some point, but it would still be on there.

It wasn't until after I nuked that dtp folder from program files/Dell/dtp that I tried it again, this time seeing the uninstall process, that it uninstalled.

People reporting it from around the web

Yes, exactly; per the post, I uninstalled it, and everything returned to normal.

part of our deployment at work is all of the pre-installed software gets removed and only drivers are left alone. we have had a TON of issues with Dell Pair utility preventing non dell bluetooth devices from connecting as well.

I wish i could convince them to just fresh image each machine with a none Dell image but "it takes too long" is the excuse I always get

so I gets autopilot Intune enrolled and then i have remediation scripts that remove all the dell crap and the 3 languages of office pre-installed.

Yep, I nuke all the preinstalled Dell stuff except for the Dell wifi driver on those systems.

we just found dell remote support agent causing jamming with software on some of our optiplexes at work... normally we remove all that dell bloat crap but somehow that got through and boy did it make using the system trash

i uninstalled all my dell programs but the dtp folder remained and is taking up an absurd amount of storage space (about 60 gb). did deleting the folder have any adverse effects for you?

That would explain why support assist was taking forever and a day to uninstall while that folder was still present. But once I removed it, it was uninstalled without issue.

The computers I removed it on, I restarted the systems without issue.

    • It's odd to call it "totally fine" when it is a blatant violation of the TOS. I'm not attacking the behavior or calling it immoral, do what you want to do, I have no dog in the race. However, you can't say it is fine when the company offering the service explicitly spells it out in the black and white that it is NOT fine. Again, do what you want, I don't care, just have the intellectual honest to acknowledge that you are using a service in a way other than intended.
    • I must be! 🤔 Are you having problems attaching a video from YouTube? Having to add a link instead of simply pasting the URL? I think another member mentioned having the same issue this week?
    • Hopefully Solved for Good Now   Ran WSReset.exe as Admin on Standard User account Prior to that logged into my Admin account that i rarely log into, and went thru Settings, and selected Terminate Store, then Reset, Restarted system. Logged into Standard User MS Account, open Windows Search, searched for WSReset.exe, right clicked Run as Admin, then restarted system a 2nd time.         Opened Windows store, checked for updates--no list of same apps came up that time thankfully.       Hopefully now fully fixed for good, as I was dealing with that since i don't know when, as normally I don't check it too often, since Auto Updates are on, and i expect it to auto update the apps correctly lol.  Now if it does somehow return, then I'm going to prepare for a full clean Windows 11 24H2 install, once RL annoyances are done within the next week or two. So, one way or the other this issue going to be permanently solved
