the biggest obstacle is going to be safety, barring musk's reputation of course. waymo looks like it has a good track record and its vehicles are equipped with lidar, radar and cameras. society has often prioritized safety, but especially so with vehicles.
tesla seems to be taking a really big risk here. a couple of bad accidents could do a lot of damage to the public perception of the service so maybe they have something up their sleeve? i read a news report saying that they would be having employees monitor the service and control the car in case something happens. feasible for a test, but full rollout which is expected to happen?
this service is barely passing the smell test for me, but it's hard for me to imagine a company like tesla would bring this out if they didn't think it was ready because a failed rollout is a serious reputation killer (even more so then HH bs because even the nut jobs won't ride it!).
