Scan Pre Order Tracking - Funny Business (Not so funny)

Recommended Posts

Does anyone here have a pre-order item that SCAN UK allows you to track the progress of your order. This is the 3rd time i have checked the status mid day-ish , showing i have came down the list by a few numbers. Then at around 5pm i seem to be 4 or 5 places higher up the list again.

Late morning today i was at position 83 , now come 5pm im up at 87.

Over the past month its been adjusted 3 times and between the 3 of them i have lost 20 places.

Just wondering if anyone else is seeing something similar ?

No, but SCAN have been around for a long long time and have a pretty good reputation.  I've used them myself several times over the years.  If you're concerned, contact them about it.

I did have until I finally made it to the top of the queue and got my shiny new GPU. They did indeed update it wrong a couple of times, it seems they update their GPU pages at 5:30 ish every night and the figures in the morning the next day are usually accurate. I think the whole thing is being confused with them offering people models from different brands and not updating the queue position accurately. They also didn't give me a proper ETA until I was in the last 5 on the queue, having said all that the fact they even give you a queue position at all puts them way ahead of all the other UK etailers.

Overclockers had stock nearly all day/night yesterday on around 10 different cards. Way more expensive than the pre order price i paid at Scan though :/

Yeah, I was getting close to the point of ordering from OcUK and then just flipping my Scan pre-order when it turned up but as you say their pricing was quite a step up. I can only think they're paying a premium to get first dibs on cards from the distributors (as well as making a bigger profit).

What card did you order?

My Scan countdown was originally 23, dropped to 19, 18, 11, 9 and then seemed to just halt for a week or so.  In that time, I saw a better model for like £30 more that they had immediate stock of - so just swapped out and paid the extra.  Scan are a GREAT company, they've been around for ages and I have dealt with their customer service dept (in useful ways, not complaints) from back when they were tiny to now - and they have ALWAYS been super helpful!

I placed an order with Scan (for a Palit Gamerock) when they actually said it was available/in stock on launch day (no pre order system). Then emailed them shortly after asking why my order had went from being a proper order to becoming a pre-order and they claimed it was an error on their part. Then all this nonsense of the numbers coming down and going back up multiple times. Maybe thinking they would have put me at the front of the queue after making/admitting the error i started off in something like 132 :/

Im thinking the card they had sold me online was sold over the counter on their in store launch day event they held, but that's just a guess.

Just going to have to ride it out now as these cards are retailing for £300 + more than the price they were when i placed my order.

Never actually had any issues with them , apart from this terrible 50 series launch.

Oh come on, you’re projecting onto Scan when you knew inside it wasn’t gonna be available there and then! Stop making up stories!

Really ? so the in-stock available button in green , order confirmation and subsequent email from scan customer services admitting error was me "Projecting". Get a grip ............ not everything people post online is made up or a lie.

Yea. Everyone knew what it was gonna be like on day 1. And from running an e-commerce store for nearly a decade I know how it works. Items have stock until they don’t - and that “until” is a very short period of time when the world is trying to buy new items.

You talk about then hoping to get bumped up the call? Come on man, you knew the score and you’re just telling tales!

Since you "claim" to be coming from an e-commerce background, you should know there is a thing called stock control and what you do/don't have available for sale. Everyone knew they were available in single or low double double digits on release day , which was obviously when i pressed the "BUY" button , not the pre order button or fake stories button.

My delivery day was stated as the 31st Jan on my order confirmation , but again that will be nonsense that i made up for a forum post.

Scan subsequently admitted the error , so i really don't understand how i "knew the score".

Mistakes happen , they admitted that, I accepted that ....... it was the going down the ladder then back up was what my original post was about.

While we are on the subject it seems like Scan have a history of repeating the same errors over and over. Selling stuff they don't actually have ..........

Quick Google search returns "MANY" people with the exact same story as mine from 4 years ago .......... maybe i manipulated time "knowing the score"

Im the same , for around £50 more i could have had the same card from Overclockers next day .......... but i got SCAM'd as some put it........

I know all about it thanks.  I'm not saying the initial error wasn't theirs - I'm saying you knew this was likely and you're trying to capitalise upon it!

My initial delivery date was also shown as the 31st, then early the week after Scan have never been the best at knowing what's coming in when. I had similar issues with an Asus router (gave up and ordered from Amazon in the end) and workstations I've ordered for work. What I would say is they're extremely friendly and helpful and a properly independent company who actually care about their customers.

The fact you're getting queue updates at all is better than anyone else in the UK market sadly.

The green button order turning into a pre-order is unfortunate at best and incompetence on their part at worst. Ordering a 5090 on launch day, there wasn't even a green button to be seen for me, despite refreshing on multiple computers, it went straight from coming soon to notify me then available for pre-order some hours later. Of the three of us in my office who ordered a launch day 5090 card I'm the only one who has received mine so far; the other two don't even have a reliable ETA yet.

What's annoying is there was stock (not all the same brand & very limited) on a few retailers on launch day , Scan was slightly cheaper and i chose them from 3 of the sites that had stock showing at that point in time. Friendly or not Scan will right now be sitting with literally millions of peoples pounds gaining interest on stock they never actually had in the first place. Yes if you are willingly being sold a pre-order then that's acceptable and part of the deal. When they seem to do this consistently it would appear that error is no longer part of the process, its a deliberate ploy. They have nothing to lose either way , you cancel after a 3 month wait and they still got interest on your/everyone else's cash in that time. Plus there will be someone there to buy that card when its available, or enter into another pre order process.

Stock control on apples will be quite loose and subject to being wrong. When it comes to 2k and 3k computer components im sure there wont be any errors. Taking orders , giving delivery dates and then sending out an email the following day saying they are sorry does not go hand in hand with running a good business that's customer focused.

Overclockers have had stock appearing the past few days at random times without announcement (with higher prices though) , if any of your colleagues are desperate.

How is it possible to capitalise on placing an order for an in stock item ?

The last thing i wanted was any type of hassle after placing an order, like im sure everyone does.

It would have been a nice gesture to place someone whom you had failed on an order near the front of the queue. I never expected to be first , but it was something like 133. If only they stuck strictly to pre order only then we would not be on here chatting about this :)

At the end of the day, things are always going to get funky for such a hot ticket item on launch day, for pretty much all retailers.  Hell, to preorder a Switch 2 from Amazon you have to ASK them to invite you to preorder! 😮

    • U.S. partially reverses Anthropic AI ban for Mythos but keeps Fable 5 off the market by Karthik Mudaliar Anthropic says that the U.S. government has finally allowed it to restore Claude Mythos 5. But of course, there's a catch. The rollout is again for a limited set of U.S. organizations that operate and defend critical infrastructure. The company announced this in a post on X (formerly Twitter). This does not mean that Anthropic's latest frontier models are back to normal availability. Fable 5, which was a tuned version of Mythos 5 for public release, remains unavailable. Anthropic said that it is still working with the government to expand Mythos 5 access and make Fable 5 available again, but there's no timeline. Reports from Bloomberg and Reuters say that this decision actually came through a letter from the U.S. Commerce Department. According to Reuters, this would allow more than 100 companies and institutions access to Mythos 5. Reuters also reported that Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s letter removes the need for export licenses for approved companies’ non-US citizen employees, as well as Anthropic’s own non-US citizen employees, while restrictions remain for organizations outside the approved list. Anthropic isn't alone with this kind of controlled rollout. OpenAI's newest model family, GPT 5.6, was announced just yesterday, but isn't available for everyone yet. In its announcement, OpenAI also said that access to these models is initially limited to a select group of trusted partners and organizations, with broader access planned later this year. Both of these cases show that frontier AI launches are no longer just ordinary product releases and more like slow and vetted deployments shaped heavily by the U.S. government.

    • Microsoft Weekly: 5 years of Windows 11, more support for Windows 10, and expensive Xbox by Taras Buria This week's news recap is here, with Microsoft giving Windows 10 one more year of support, Windows 11 getting new taskbar settings in preview updates, Steam Machine prices, higher XBOX prices, and many more. Quick links: Windows 10 and 11 Windows Insider Program Updates are available Reviews are in Gaming news Great deals to check Windows 11 and Windows 10 Here, we talk about everything happening around Microsoft's latest operating system in the Stable channel and preview builds: new features, removed features, controversies, bugs, interesting findings, and more. And, of course, you may find a word or two about older versions. On June 24, 2026, Windows 11 turned five. The controversial operating system was released half a decade ago, and during these years, it received a fair share of criticism (such as poor Windows Search and its web results), which Microsoft is now actively addressing with regular preview updates that deliver missing, long-requested features. With Windows 12 nowhere to be seen on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if Windows 11 can stay on the market for as long as Windows 10 did. Speaking of Windows 10 and staying on the market, this week, Microsoft quietly prolonged the Extended Security Updates program for Windows 10, allowing users to get one more year of security updates if they do not want or cannot upgrade to Windows 11. Finally, Microsoft released this month's non-security update for Windows 11. KB5095093 arrived with a traditionally long list of new features, including point-in-time restore, new Windows Update settings, quieter Windows Widgets, new accessibility features, File Explorer updates and performance improvements, and more. Windows Insider Program Here is what Microsoft released for Windows Insiders this week: Builds Canary Channel Build 29617.1000 and build 28120.2374 These builds bring new accessibility features, new Windows Update controls, audio improvements, and more. Dev Channel Build 26300.8758 This build includes redesigned taskbar settings, File Explorer improvements, and more. Beta Channel Build 26220.8754 and build 28020.2366 This small update fixes the OneDrive bug in File Explorer, tweaks system sounds in dark mode, and more. Updates are available This section covers software, firmware, and other notable updates (released and coming soon) delivering new features, security fixes, improvements, patches, and more from Microsoft and third parties. If you use AI-powered browsing history search in Microsoft Edge, the company has bad news. A new update on the Microsoft 365 Roadmap revealed that Microsoft is discontinuing the feature. Despite using on-device models for natural search, some users found it creepy, claiming that Microsoft lacks trust in features like this. While the ability to find pages without using 100% precise words may sound cool, customers argued that it was nothing but another feature to bloat the browser with more AI. Good riddance? PowerToys received several updates this week. For one, Microsoft released version 0.100.1 with several improvements and bug fixes for the recently arrived version 0.100. A couple of days later, Microsoft dropped another update, this time fixing memory leaks in Command Palette Dock. In addition, the company is working on a new module that will make it easier to switch between windows within one application using the Alt + ` shortcut. The new module should make it to the stable release somewhere soon. Reviews are in Here is the hardware and software we reviewed this week This week, Steven Parker published several reviews. He shared his experience with the Creative Sound Blaster AE-X PCIe, a high-quality sound card with a headphone amp, low-latency communications, great build quality, and DSD256. However, it is on the pricier side of the spectrum, and it lacks EMI shielding. Check out the full review here. The second review is about the TerraMaster F4-425 Pro, an octa-core Intel NAS with a stand-out feature: built-in AI (OpenClaw). If you plan to purchase a new Xbox, it's time to act now. This week, Microsoft announced yet another Xbox price increase. Starting August 1, 2026, all Xbox Series X|S models with 512 GB of storage will cost $100 more. As for the 1TB models, they are going up in price by a whopping $150. Finally, Microsoft is discontinuing the 2TB Xbox Series X. To make up for that, Microsoft announced a few programs to make its consoles more accessible. Those include BNPL, interest-free financing, pre-owned consoles, certified refurbished consoles, and more. Valve also shared some not-so-welcome news. The company has finally announced prices of the upcoming Steam Machine console, and if you plan to buy one, get ready to spend a whopping $1,049 on the 512GB configuration. The Steam Machine is now available for preorder, with shipments scheduled for June 29, 2026. Grand Theft Auto VI also received its official price tag. Rockstar Games announced that the long-anticipated game will launch at $79.99 for the base edition and $99.99 for the ultimate edition. The latter includes an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story." Those who preorder the game will get extra bonuses, including a Vintage Vice City Pack of cosmetic items as well as a free month of GTA+. NVIDIA announced new games for its GeForce NOW streaming service. Those include Dark Scrolls, SAND: Raiders of Sophie, Deer & Boy, EMPULSE, and more. Steam is running its annual Summer Sale, during which you can purchase plenty of various games with big discounts. It runs until July 9, so in case you missed it, you can still get some games at a lower price. Also, you can get two games for free in the Epic Games Store, plus more deals are available in this week's Weekend PC Game Deals issue. This link will take you to other issues of the Microsoft Weekly series. You can also support Neowin by registering for a free member account or subscribing for extra member benefits, along with an ad-free tier option.
