PIN Error in Safe Boot

Bear with me here, I’ll try to explain as best as I can. I recently did a clean install of Windows 11 Pro and got to the stage where I had to set up a PIN (no other option was given). Everything was okay from that point on.

Today, I saw that a new NVIDIA driver was available, so I decided to do a clean driver install via msconfig (Safe Boot). I checked the box and restarted when prompted. After the restart, it asked for my which I thought was weird, type my PIN as required but it failed. No matter what I tried, I could not get in, and I ended up needing to reinstall Windows again. 

I’m just wondering if I did something wrong or if this is a known issue. Pin Error in Safe Boot

I had that happen to me on an old PC, can't remember how now but I did find a guide to fix it at the time.

After seeing that you had the same error I did a search for PIN Error Safe Boot and found this on Reddit seems that it a known issue that has not been fixed buy Microsoft for a long time.

I've had this happens in the past and gave up on Safe Boot as a result. Is the computer on wifi or ethernet? If its wifi this may be one of those situations where MS demands ethernet without bothering to tell you.

I was on ethernet when it happened, I was racking my brain for a fix but ended up doing a install.

the small "PIN" and "password" icon images in the Safe mode welcome screen are "flipped" or switched around, than when booting in the normal mode welcome screen, regardless of using wifi or ethernet

Hello,

Just to check, no hardware issues with the keyboard (missed or phantom keypresses, caps lock key on, etc.) that could have caused the wrong characters to be entered for the PIN?

From the reddit posts, if anyone lands here with this problem in future:

Press shift and select restart then go to advanced settings then go to cmd then type bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot then exit from cd then continue to windows 11 u can login now

I don’t think so. I reinstalled everything and set up the PIN again without any issues
