Indie Game Suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hello,

There are a lot of fun games on Board Game Arena:  https://www.boardgamearena.com/

There are both free and paid tiers, but the free tier should be enough for casual use.

-Hollow Knight (2017) (I am currently playing this for the first time (I have about 69-77hrs into the game currently). it's said this is the best, or at least one of the best, metroidvania games. it's sold about 15 million copies)

-Hollow Knight: Silksong (2025) (ill get to this after I finish the first game as this was just released Sep 4th. some claim it's the GTA6 of indie games. from early reports it's sold about 6 million copies in the first month or so of it's release, which I am sure some of it was due to the hype built-up from the first game along with the long delay (8 year gap) before the games release.)

but keep in mind these games are challenging as they are more difficult than your typical game for sure. but if you are into those types of games they have a solid feel to them etc.

p.s. I would say Hollow Knight is probably the all-around most I enjoyed a game released over the last 10 years or so (even though it's a bit rage inducing at times ;) ).

There is a nice indie game called Strange Antiquities if you like somewhat puzzle games. Or Fields of Mistria, which is still in EA, but a big patch landed recently. That's a farming sim. I have recently been addicted to Abiotic Factor, which must be one of the BEST survival games there is. It's absolutely amazing. Also, I really enjoy Tainted Grail: Fall of Avalon. It scratches the specific itch that TES: Oblivion left in me. Oh, and for the first time, I play as a mage and I don't suck! So, pick your poison!

If youre looking for a 2d platformer a little more chill than hollow knight, check out Ori and the Blind Forest. It's beautiful and really well designed.

If you want something 3d I recommend checking out Psychonauts 2 for the same reason. I've heard the first one is really good too but controller support on pc for the first is messy.

does anyone have any good suggestions for recent indie games you guys are playing?

This isn't recent, and I acknowledge that you're asking for recent. But a hidden gem from back in the day that I love to play still is Zombie Driver. The HD version is on Steam and GOG. It's by far one of my favorite craptop arcade games. I played it on my Thinkpad between classes all of the time. Super fun.

Abiotic Factor keeps popping up and your description sold me. For someone jumping in solo, is it still worth it, or does it shine more in co-op here?

@KernelInsight, I’ve put some hours into Abiotic Factor solo, and it’s definitely doable! It feels a bit like "Half-Life meets Project Zomboid." Playing solo makes the atmosphere much creepier and more survival-focused, whereas co-op turns it into chaotic fun. You might have to tweak some world settings to make it less grindy alone, but the progression is very satisfying regardless.

Also, if anyone is looking for something "actually fun" and fast-paced, I’ve been hooked on Selaco. It’s a retro-style FPS built on GZDoom but feels incredibly modern. The AI is smarter than in most AAA games!
