What does the log file say?

You might need to enable logging before you can see the file. In VLC on Linux I went to Tools > Preferences, then accessed the "all" options rather than "simple." From there I found an option called "Logger" and then needed to tell it where to save the log file.

Once you've done that, recreate the issue and let us know what the log file says.

Are these retail movie Blu-rays?  VLC can't decrypt the encryption w/o some additional work.  Take a look at this...

Would also take a look at MakeMKV to help rule out drive issues before trying to "fix" VLC.  It can rip Blu-Rays w/o additional work.

If I'm not mistaken, BD drives have two lasers, one for CD & DVD, and one for Bluray's.
I bought a used one of ebay one time, and br laser was out, cd & dvd's worked fine (got refunded w/o hassle).
Have you tested various types of media, ex do you have access to blank / burned data bd's?

I use an older (paid) version of Cyberlink PowerDVD 12. Can't say it's the best option, but it works with watching bluray movies on my computer.
They may have a trial version you may be able to test with - https://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdvd-ultra/overview_en_US.html

Hello,

What is the brand and model of the drive?

Does it read CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs?  Not the ones for music and movies, but for software?

From his other posts, he's got a lot more wrong with his pc beyond his blu-ray drive.

Well, he hasn't answered anything since October. So I'm guessing he got it fixed, or didn't care.
