Not Listing Sub-Folders in Finder Search

Recommended Posts

On macOS Finder (Tahoe), how can I list ONLY the MP4 files in the current folder, excluding all MP4 inside subfolders? I want a method that works in Finder itself, not Terminal, Spotlight, or recursive search.

Hi bias ChatGPT Groc and if you can name an AI, I've asked that too. All of them gave me, quite confidently, really bad advice! I'm hoping asking humans, here will result in a more fruitful answer. Thank you

Method 1: Using Finder's Search Bar with Scope Limitation

This is the most direct way to generate a filtered list of only the MP4 files located at the top level of your current directory.

Navigate to the Target Folder: Open the Finder window for the folder you wish to search.

Initiate a Search: Click in the search bar in the top-right corner of the window or press ⌘F (Command + F).

Define the Search Scope: By default, Finder may search "This Mac". Immediately below the search bar, a new toolbar will appear. You must click on the button corresponding to your current folder's name (e.g., "Search: [Your Folder Name]"). This is the critical step that restricts the search to the current directory level.

Add Search Criteria:

Click the + button on the far right, just below the search bar, to add a search filter row.

Set the first dropdown menu to Kind.

Set the second dropdown menu to Movie. This will find all movie files.

For more precision to isolate only MP4 files, change the first dropdown to File Extension and type mp4 in the text field.

The Finder window will now display a filtered list showing only the MP4 files that exist directly within that folder, excluding any from its subdirectories.

Pro-Tip: You can save this search as a Smart Folder by clicking the "Save" button. This creates a dynamic folder in your sidebar that will always show the results of this specific, non-recursive search.

Method 2: Quick Visual Grouping via List View

If your goal is less about filtering out other files and more about quickly isolating the MP4s visually, this is a faster, non-search alternative.

Switch to List View: In your target folder, press ⌘2 (Command + 2) or select "as List" from the View menu.

Sort by Kind: Locate the Kind column header. If it's not visible, right-click any column header and check Kind from the context menu.

Click the Kind Header: This will sort all items in the folder by their file type. All your MP4 files (which will be identified as "MPEG-4 movie" or similar) will be grouped together, making them easy to select and manage as a block, separate from folders and other file types.

Summary

Method 1 (Search) is ideal when you need a clean, filtered view that hides all other items and can be saved for repeated use.

Method 2 (Sorting) is superior for quick, in-place organization when you want to group the MP4s but still see them in the context of the other files in the directory.
