Unable to copy a file to a folder [where I have full rights & permissions]

Recommended Posts

I am unable to copy a (preferences file from Brave) to my new user folder on my new computer.

I have full control and all permissions on this folder.

However, the message I'm getting is:

What can be done to tackle this? Or circumvent it, so that I can copy to the folder and use it?

Is Brave open when you try to do the copy?

It looks like the simplest solution is to do it through the browser rather than Windows Explorer. See here.

It's the " Replace the Profile Folder > Replace the new \brave-browser folder with the one you backed up earlier."  that doesn't work.

For some reason the new folder (new computer) is "locked" to copy some files. ' Some files' , because there are files/folders copied. Apparently not all, which I think is strange...

Have you turned off Tamper Protection in Windows Security?

It's not available, because ESET has taken over these permissions & settings.

I have turned off ESET completely, but that didn't do anything; still not able to copy to that folder.
I can copy that file to the Downloads-folder, but not specifically that Brave...Default folder.

Finally I managed.

Uninstalled Brave completely. Than used the File Explorer to delete the main folder under Users\<name>\AppData (with everything turned off ESET on firewalls, file protecten and web security with UAC off).

Than reinstalled Brave, and now the Preferences file can be copied.

Strange... same things I did before, but now it magically works. Happy.

I had to reinstall Windows 11 once more
I had a situation where my user profile got corrupted [didn't get the pop-up authenticator-screen on MS Office]. And for some reason the Preferences file could not be copied in this new instance..

I think it has to do with some strong security things by ESET on/in the Users (sub)folders. I mean, after the new installation of Windows 11 I immediately installed Brave and copied the Preferences-file [so no ESET or whatsoever-security-software installed]... and it worked!

Continued installing en setting up and it worked smoothly.

[[ I also tried some PowerShell commands on takeown and icacls on my username and brave-folder. All with no success. ]]

    • Exciting! It’s amazing how hearing Japanese can naturally enhance the perceived quality of any experience or product.
    • Your other comment in another article says otherwise, namely "Microsoft veteran wants to replace every single line of C/C++ code with Rust and AI".
    • Sued and... exonerated. Oh, they learned a lesson alright. They learned that anyone who uses the word "antiturst" in conjunction with "Microsoft" is an idiot, even if that person is Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. That judge ruined the image of the US justice system. Microsoft Edge has a 5.14% market share. Also, Windows is no longer the #1 OS. None of this constitutes a monopoly. Google Chrome, however, has 70.25% share. Also, Google's Android is the #1 OS. Now that's closer to a monopoly.
