Jose_49
Hi everyone 🤗. Long story short: I want to repurpose my old Dell XPS 7590 as a NAS device that I'd like to connect via a MacBook and a VPS using Tailscale. It's main purpose (for now) is to use it to centralize my programming folders. (Generally under 100 KB files) I completely forgot about blown away SSD prices (I was only paying attention to RAM). That's when it hit me: China and possible an SSD from them. I'd like to purchase a 2TB SSD NVME 2280 SSD that I can plug into my machine. I can then expand it thanks to the Thunderbolt 3 port. What do you recommend me in terms of price/durability? Edit: Just found out that 2230 works as well Edited February 15 by Jose_49 Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1463714-decent-longevity-m2-22302280-ssd-2tb-for-a-nas-programming-laptop/ Share on other sites
goretsky Supervisor Posted February 16 Supervisor Share Posted February 16 Hello, I would suggest comparing 2TB M.2 NVMe SSDs from reputable manufacturers such as AData, Corsair, Crucial (aka Micron), Kingston, SanDisk (formerly Western Digital), Samsung, Seagate Electronics, Transcend, and so forth. Then getting the model that has the longest warranty in terms of both years and TBW (terabytes written). Also, since you have an Thunderbolt 3 port, you can easily add a 2TB external HDD for backing up the laptop's internal SSD, although that will probably be just a USB and not a Thunderbolt device. That's not too critical as a single external USB hard disk drive is unlikely to saturate a USB 3.0 ("USB SuperSpeed") 5.0 Gbps link, let alone a Thunderbyte 3 (40 Gbps) one. I'll also mention that Neowin's 2026 drive poll would be a good starting point for your research into SSD and HDD manufacturers. Jose_49
Thanks @goretsky As usual on point!!! I was able to nab a Crucial P310!!! 2TB for $180. Expensive AF, but I needed it as I'm building this to run work + OpenClaw (as crazy as it seems) goretsky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1463714-decent-longevity-m2-22302280-ssd-2tb-for-a-nas-programming-laptop/#findComment-599042465 Share on other sites
Mindovermaster Global Moderator Posted February 17 Global Moderator Share Posted February 17 I have 3x 1TB Crucial P310. Good SSD. Decided to get a few after Crucial is out of business, goretsky 1 Share Link to comment https://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1463714-decent-longevity-m2-22302280-ssd-2tb-for-a-nas-programming-laptop/#findComment-599042482 Share on other sites
