Official IPB 2 Thread

I really have been happy with IPB. I can't really compare it to VB since I haven't ever used it from an Admin perspective. I do like how many sites have vbulletin built into their normal site navigation. Like it's in a frame (does that make sense?).

I think IPB2 will be great, but I am not sure if I will upgrade and have to redo all my mods.

IPB is going ot be nice, I am just worried about the mod I use called SSI+. I am going ot have to do some major recoding to the frontpage of my site (ipdynamic lite) to get it all working.

SSI+ is created by cowwebdesign right? I am sure he will upgrade it to work with 2. :)

Why cant they ever add a fricken backup/restore feature? Would it kill them to add one even for newbies? Not everyone is gonna know phpmyadmin ....

Even phpMyAdmin wont even let you import large .sql files, you need to access the server with SSH to do it right.

Backup would be pretty easy to add though.

No, but vB doesn't have customizable settings, user permissions masks, multi-quote, in-line moderation, built-in database query caching, or a plugin API. Plus, vB (even vB3) is slower than IPB. When neowin switched to IPB (which I helped by writing a custom convertor from vB to IPB when there was none), the server loads dropped dramatically (IIRC they were hovering around 5 and went to 2-3 with IPB). IPB uses drastically less queries and has faster processing on the PHP side of things as well. It scales well to large boards with large threads, and is generally more "friendly" for new users than vB that I've found.

And a similar threads feature is your show-stopper reason for sticking with vB, just hack it in to IPB. It's not that complex of a feature...

You hack it for neowin. You're the PHP Masta.

I think its a nice thing to have, you don't always need to use search if you want to find something related. :)

Yep, he is :D

 Between timdorr, Redmak, and the god-like coding skills of IPS's Matt Mecham (no discredit to Redmak or timdorr here, but Matt did write the whole dang IPB by himself), I think absolutely anything is possible!

If you dare them to make pigs fly, they can do it! :woot:

hmm... lets see now... in IPB we group threads about the same topic. Ex.Longhorn threads goes to LH section of neowin.net forums.

on vB there is a feature where it shows a table at the bottom with links to similar topics...

IPB does not have it, but, doesn't really bother me either way. I think that should just be a mod...

This topic is now closed to further replies.

    • How does it compare to the "SeeStar S30 Pro" and the "Vespera PRO 2"?
    • Indeed. And note that those units are MUCH cheaper than this new Steam Machine...ahem.
