Installing RDC /Terminal Server for Win2000 Pro

Recommended Posts

Terminal services is not in my Add/Remove Programs Windows Component list of Windows 2000 Pro. Is it only for Windows 2000 server? Is there a way to install Terminal Services or Terminal Server in Windows 2000 professional? Basically, I want to be able to use Remote Desktop Connection to a Windows 2000 Pro host machine. I read from multiple sources that this is possible via terminal server. Please advice.

Any help appreicated. Thanks.

I do not believe you can RDC "to" a 2k pro machine. You can host the webclient - see below

Overview

The Remote Desktop Web Connection ActiveX control allows you to access your computer through Remote Desktop, via the Internet, from another computer using Internet Explorer. You must be using Internet Information Services (IIS) to host a Web site to use this feature.

Remote Desktop Web Connection provides most of the same functionality as the Remote Desktop Connection software.

But I am pretty sure, this just allows you to host the active-x control - so you can connect to a machine running terminal server, which would be a xp pro machine or 2k server, or NT term server. This does not allow you to directly connect to the machine hosting the control.

Your 1st source states this "easy to access a machine running Windows 2000 Terminal Server"

Your second source seems quite clear that only 2k server, xp pro and NT term servers can be connected to using the client. I am at a loss to where you got the idea you could use RD to connect to a 2k pro machine.

There are many 3rd party apps that will allow you to remote control a 2k pro machine - VNC being quite good and FREE

I don't believe that its possible either to use RDC into a 2K pro machine since I could not find any info on how to add Terminal Server to win2k Pro, I know it's in Win2K server. And I'm aware of other Remote Desktop softwares like VNC, PCAnywhere, Timbuktu, and RemoteAnywhere, even Citrix Metaframe. I just like built-in to OS ones so that no extra softwares installation needed, just turn on the builtin features. I might go back to using Netmeeting Remote Desktop since its still in both Win2K and WinXP. It's a shame, I really like the RDC from winXP.

Thanks for the info on Remote Desktop Web Connection. I might give that a try.

can't be done on win2k pro. though you can d/l the RD Client to control another WinXP machine.

my whole point with this thread is to RDC into win2K pro, not winXP. The key is installing Terminal Server into win2k pro. If it is possible to do this then it is possible to RDC into win2K pro machine. But I guess not possible to install terminal server into win2k pro. :(

why is that? Is there something special about win2k server that is missing in the pro version but is required for terminal services? Or is it just as simple as MS not putting it in win2k pro, nor providing terminal service option for win2k pro. The RDC in winXP is excellent, its a shame that it's not available for other OSes.

RDC isn't available for Windows XP Home Edition...

    • I don't expect to see 12 this year, but not for this reason. Windows 10 got a 21H2 update the year Windows 11 came out, it even got 22H2 the next yet.
    • Android 16 adds a new "network notification" setting that warns you when a rogue "stingray" device is trying to spy on you There are many simple things you can do to keep your private information safe, like using strong passwords, scrutinizing app permissions, and only installing apps from trusted sources. However, some attacks are much harder to protect yourself against, as they’re so sophisticated and stealthy that they can happen without you ever noticing. One such attack tricks your phone into connecting to a fake, insecure mobile network, which is difficult for the average person to detect. Fortunately, the new Android 16 update has a feature that can warn you when someone is using this tactic to snoop on you. This type of attack uses a device called a “stingray.” An attacker sets up this device near a target they want to surveil, and it mimics a legitimate cell tower. The stingray tricks nearby mobile devices into connecting to it, allowing the attacker to collect unique identifiers (like the IMEI) and even force them onto an older, more insecure communication protocol. These identifiers allow attackers to target specific devices for analysis, while switching protocols can let them intercept unencrypted text messages and phone calls. https://www.androidauthority.com/android-16-mobile-network-security-3571497/
    • It's worse in Canary this week. When you type something in the address bar and press enter, most cases it defaults to "Ask copilot" that shoves whatever you wrote into copilot. Then you have to retype whatever you wanted and use the down arrow or mouse to select your search engine instead of copilot. Each version that has this behavior(that can't be turned off in settings yet) I'm sending feedback in hoping they don't do this into other channels.
    • Oh wow i really didn't know about this! 😳 Could you tell where they're available even if not public?
