I agree with Opti. Sounds like mass storage controller or hard drive. Try the following: Go to a command prompt (Start>(All) Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt) and type in "chkdsk c: /f /v /r". It will ask you to run chkdsk on the next reboot, type "y". Now reboot and let chkdsk do a thorough check of your hard drive. If your error still persists you may be looking at problem that's only remedied by replacing hardware. Good luck, we've all been there.

Okay, now THAT doesn't even make sense. :s When did this happen, exactly?

shodown I'd recommend you take it to a shop to get it fixed. You either have a hardware problem (most likely) or serious corruption in the Windows core files. In either case I'm afraid that you are very unlikely to have your problem fixed in the forum. Sorry.

Ok, so i went through all the boot discs to the XP setup. Trying to navigate to formatting the drive, i got a completely random bluescreen relating to DVD Writing software, and i don't even have a DVD writer

I had this same problem last time i reformatted, and taking one stick of RAM out seemed to solve it. So i deleted and created a partition, and installed XP fine. I installed SP1 and used Windows Update to get everything critical. Then i installed the latest Omega drivers, my on board sound and nForce drivers. I decided to try a game, so i installed Far Cry, ran it, and as per usual, it crashed to the desktop after a few minutes play. I installed AutoPatcher, ran it, and got this blue screen:

0x0000000A (0xA05462EC, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X80JI36F7)

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

So now i'm really confused.

I seem to have solved the problem. I updated all the Forceware found here, and decided to check the BIOS to see that no settings were weird. I saw that the CPU was running at 50C, so i took the sides of my case off just in case overheating was the problem. I played Far Cry for two hours with no crashes the the desktop. Excited, i ran AutoPatcher and the install went perfectly. So i guess i should try doing some stuff with the case on and off, to see if that's the cause, and if not it must have been a conflict with mobo drivers.

Such a relief to get this working; thanks for all your help guys :)
