Why is it called Cheese Cake?

Actually he was questioning the cake portion of the name....

...

 why am I responding to this thread.

Oh yeah! Lol, I think you're right! Weeeeeell... Pies usually have a layer of crust on top of them while cakes... Uhh.... Don't... Ahem.... :shifty:

Hrmmm.. let's see what dictionary.com has to say about this:

Cake:

1. A sweet baked food made of flour, liquid, eggs, and other ingredients, such as raising agents and flavorings.

2. A flat rounded mass of dough or batter, such as a pancake that is baked or fried.

3. A flat rounded mass of hashed or chopped food that is baked or fried; a patty.

4. A shaped or molded piece, as of soap or ice.

5. A layer or deposit of compacted matter: a cake of grime in the oven.

Pie:

1. A baked food composed of a pastry shell filled with fruit, meat, cheese, or other ingredients, and usually covered with a pastry crust.

2. A layer cake having cream, custard, or jelly filling.

3. A whole that can be shared

Cheesecake:

1. A cake made of sweetened cottage cheese or cream cheese, eggs, milk, sugar, and flavorings.

The definition of cheesecake is contradicting since cheesecake contains no flour.. and the "mass of dough or batter that is baked" is not flat, either, so it does not fall in place with the second definition of cake. Hrm, so considering that the filling is essentially a custard I'd say cheesecake is a pie. But cheesecake is the name not a descriptive term so therefore we must call it "cheesecake pie" not "cheesepie".

From now on we, my fellow Neowinians, must refer to this dessert as "Cheesecake Pie"! :woot:

no ppl stop...pie..is different..pie u never put in the fridge..etc..

cheese cake(witch my mom makes very well) on the other hand is cooked and put in the fridge...its really crappy if its hot...just imagine...cheese cake with strawberry on tope or cherry...but w8 its boiling hot..

na dosent work....cheese cake is cold..

cakes r always sweet..pies can sumtims b sweet...but not always....

Of course, the definition of a pie and a cake change depending where in the world you are. For that matter, the definitions of each have changed over the course of time.

No matter what you want to call it, and no matter if it's a pie or a cake, my wife makes the best damn Chocolate cheesecake. Hmm... might have to see if I can talk her into making one soon... :p
