If thats the case, try again and again.

If doesnt show up in add/remove and shows it again on WU, might have to delete the catroot2 folder, delete all temp files, etc etc and try agin.

Well, read his above posts ...

I think you should read his above posts.

He is having trouble installing Windows Updates via the web site.

If he fixes this issue which is easy enough, he can get all the updates and critical fixes.

Reinstalling is a stupid idea.

DaCoOlNeSs, the issue is with custom themes and reinstalling xp would fix the issue.

And how is it related to custom themes? How is Windows Update not installing related to this? Im using custom themes. Most people on Neowin using custom themes. Please elaborate how his issues are related to custom themes and why he should reinstall windows becuase of these custom themes!!

nope, it still happens after deleting everything to do with temporary stuff

what about upgrading to XP Pro and trying?

Delete the contents of this folder.

C:\Program Files\WindowsUpdate\V4

Firstly

Go to Start/Run/CMD and type in:

del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log

Secondly

Rename or delete the catroot2 folder and or do the following

At the command prompt (Start/Run/CMD), type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line:

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

and

Lastly

Open a Command Prompt and re-register the following files by typing "REGSVR32 <FILENAME>". Don't use the "<>" and substitute the appropriate file. Then press Enter - you should get a "succeeded" message on each attempt.

The files are:

SOFTPUB.DLL

WINTRUST.DLL

INITPKI.DLL

DSSENH.DLL

RSAENH.DLL

CRYPTDLG.DLL

Did you reboot before you tried? or at least retsrated the browser? : Yes

Did you rename/delete the catroot2 folder? : wont let me!

Did you remove the contents of the Programs Files/Windows Update folder? : i dont have one.....

Did you delete all temp information? : yup

Did you rename/delete the catroot2 folder? : wont let me!

Will let you.

Can try safe mode, or the following

net stop cryptsvc

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2

net start cryptsvc

Did you remove the contents of the Programs Files/Windows Update folder? : i dont have one.....

Go to my computer, Tools, folder options, View Tab and select 'show hidden files and folder' and click apply and ok.

Its might be hidden in the Program Files folder but should see it now.

    • Hello, I am using a Hitron CODA56 cable modem with Comcast Xfinity's 1200 Mbps service.  No issues noted.  I had looked at the Motorola and Netgear options for a cable modem, but neither was available for purchase at the time I upgraded my cable connection. There are multiple models in the Netgear Nighthawk X10 line-up.  I am guessing you have either the the Netgear Nighthawk X10 AD7000 model (R8900) or the Netgear Nighthawk X10 AD7200 model (R9000) model, is that correct?  Both of these only have one gigabit WAN (internet) ports for connection to the modem, all of the remaining ports for the LAN side of things are gigabit Ethernet ports.  The 10GbE port on the devices is meant for connection to local NAS storage.  I suppose you could connect the desktop computer directly to it, although it would still be limited by the gigabit connection between the cable modem and the Netgear residential gateway broadband router. I would suggest looking for a residential gateway broadband router from a company like Asus, Netgear, TP-Link or maybe even Ubiquiti, depending upon budget, that has 2.5Gbps (or faster) WAN and LAN ports.  That would allow you to make full use of the 1.2Gbps connection from your ISP as well as have some room for future growth, speed-wise.
