How To Extract A File From Installation CD

Recommended Posts

I notice a lot of people on the forum needing a file here and there for some reason or another. Maybe this can help.

A side note here: I can remember a couple of years back, when XP was new to us, it took me, and a bunch of guys on another forum about three hours to figure this one out. Some tips and tweaks we take for granted now. But some things came to us very hard back then.

People sometimes get chastised for offering up tips too commonly known today. But if you have a tip or tweak that you think can help, don't worry about that. Just offer it up, because someone out there still doesn't know about it...and some people worked very hard to get that tip or tweak to offer others.

How to extract a file from installation cd using the run box:

Put in your installation cd. If you don't have a TEMP folder in the root of C: drive, create one.

Use these as examples for the files you may want to extract:

cut & paste the following into Start - Run:

expand g:\i386\access.cp_ c:\temp\access.cpl

expand g:\i386\sndrec32.ex_ c:\temp\sndrec.exe

Rename the file from .ex_ to .exe, or to whichever extention it is, after it is expanded. Then place the file where it needs to be.

Extract File Using msconfig:

Put your installation cd in. If you don't have a TEMP folder in the root of C: drive, create one. Now pull up msconfig. Now hit "Expand File". Place the file you wish to restore in the first box.

Now here's the tricky part...The file on on your cd may not have the same ".dll" or ".exe" extention as the one you want. It may look like ".dl_" or "".ex_"...you have to browse the cd to seek it out. Highlight it once you find it, and click okay.

Now browse to the Temp folder you created, click on "expand".

Rename the file from .ex_ to .exe, or to whichever extention it is, after it is expanded. Then place the file where it needs to be.
