Enable Pixel and Vertex Shaders 2.0 in Far Cry?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm experience problems with Far Cry on my brand new Radeon 9800 pro, I'm only getting frame rates of 25-35fps even with detail only set to medium, AA off, in resolution 1024x768. I have a AMD 1700+ and 512Mb DDR Ram yet it's barely playable, sometimes frame rate drops below 20. I've noticed this in the log, it's not using the DX9 pixel and vertex shaders:-

Vertex Shaders version 2.0

Pixel Shaders version 2.0

Use Hardware Shaders for ATI R300 GPU

Pixel shaders usage: PS1.1 only

Vertex shaders usage: VS1.1 only

Anyone have a clue why that is or does it just not use the new pixel and vertex shaders? That seems a little hard to believe. I've tried using Catalyst drivers 4.3 and the new 4.4 and even the latest Omega drivers, still same problem. I get a 3d Mark 2003 score of 5750 so what's the problem, argh.

I guess your processor might be a bottleneck.

im seconding that notion...

if you look on the bottom of the box (which i am doing right now) it says (AMD Athlon XP 2000+ or above or 2 GHz Pentium 4 recommended)... so i would also have to say your processor is what is holding you back...

I have a 3000 and I still get slow down issues here and there.

how are you getting the fps?

it runs at what i would guess 30-45 on my machine with everythign on max, but i wanna know

dont know if this is how he is doing it, but for this and any other game google search FRAPS...

nifty, free (depending on the version) app to check FPS during a game. (Y)

there is a console command to show the fps but I just use fraps to show the fps (saves me the bother of typing it in every time). Fraps can be found here http://www.fraps.com It's free if you just use it for showing the FPS, if you want to record movies then you have to pay.

This is a fix for nVidia, i know you got ATi but it might help :)

"The game has a "special NV3x PS2.0 path" in it. You need to start the game in developer mode (add -DEVMODE to the shortcut) and then type \d3d9_nv30_ps20 1 in the console.

This produces prettier graphics (in certain areas) but makes the game run a bit slower."

So are you guys saying that the recommended CPU is bottlenecking it? If that is the case, don't you think they would have made the recommended requirements alittle higher?

heheh hahah since when were system requirements on any game accurate?

I agree with whats been said though, its most probably a lack of processor power. Do areas with fewer NPCs seem to lag less?

no, indoor areas with loads of baddies run at high frame rates, but outdoors with no-one around runs at a low frame rate. My cpu is actually a 1800+ only a little short of the 2000+ that's recommended and the fact I have a 9800pro should surely more than compensate?

thanks for that seems to work on my ati and it doesn't seem to hurt the frame rate, if anything actually runs a few fps more, the command \d3d9_nv30_vs20 1 enables the vertex shaders 2.0 as well, at least it didn't say unrecognised command so it must be do something;);)

Patch far cry to 1.1 and install the latest DirectX and ATI drivers. Then come back to us if its not fixed

I've been using version 1.1 all along, and have the latest DirectX installed and using the new 4.4 Ati Catalyst drivers

read the specs in my sig, Game runs fine for me, i get 40+ fps in most areas, only on the last level or so (volcano) does it dip below 20, I have everything on medium, 1X for AF, and 1024x768@32BPP. not bad for a 1.6GHz processor. The video card is overclocked too, i'm just trying to save up enough money to get a athlon 2400 or so, something at least a little faster than my 1.6, plus at least 1 gig of ram.

I did have one problem in one of the levels, i won't spoil it for anyone, but Val disappeared, and I couldn't continue the level... she just vanished.. had to quit and restart it, she was back again.. very strange, and hasn't been duplicated since.

i know with nvidia card if you enable coolbits you get a second option with 3D that makes it possible to force ps1.1 or 2.0 or a default one.

with 1.1 all settings on max the game runs fine for me, 70fps+ at most of the time.

if I enable ps2.0, the framerate doesn't drop at all it's just that my soldiers and some vehicles apear as completely white and while it makes them easier to spot it's very annoying.

You need to change one of the settings to "very high" for ps2.0 to be used. Can't remember which one, but I think it's "lightning effects" (bottom right one i believe)

Thanks man, I upped the detail and it now says in the log:-

Pixel shaders usage: PS.2.0 and PS.1.1

Vertex shaders usage: VS.2.0 and VS.1.1
