I couldn't find anything on DHCP option 82 support in windows 2003.

I was wondering if:

a) anyone knows if its there or not

b) if there is a way to some how add it myself

c) get some type of plugin

I do not manage servers, just networks, and would like to have option 82 enabled on DHCP service so i can see the switch and port associated with the IP without searching all over. Since I don't know much about the DHCP service, or adding options, I was wondering if anyone knew anything or could point me in the right direction.

I'm not an expert, so excuse me if this is not true...

The 82 option must be enabled on a switch, not on a windows server. That option allows the switch to identify the hosts on its own ports, so the switch sends info about itself and the port assigned to the client.

I'm sure that you could find more info on cisco...

I hope this helps :)

Yeah its part of the switch configuration and it works with DHCP relay for Cisco and UDP helper for other switchs

Here is an Article that explain some of it. I had to look it up because i didn't know anything about it.

Correct me if i'm wrong and confirm it if i'm right but basically this feature enable you to create Virtual Vlan for each host connected to the switch???

Have fun!!!

I know this must be enabled on the switch, but the DHCP server needs to understand the option 82 part of the packet. I already know the switch needs to be configured, but when the DHCP packet comes to the DHCP server, it needs to be able to strip off, interpret, and add the option 82 info.

It's stated in the first paragraph of the link you posted: This feature enables the DHCP relay agent (Catalyst 3550 switch) to include information about itself and the attached client when forwarding DHCP requests from a DHCP client to a DHCP server.

Option 82 must be configured on switch AND the DHCP server. I'm looking to set it up on the server.

Option 82 & Windows Servers -Grrrrrrrrr

Option 82 is used by DHCP relay agents to allow them to keep track of DHCP requests and deal with them more effectively.

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN:

1)"DHCP Discover" packet broadcasted into network.

2)DHCP relay agent (Switch, DSLAM, Router, etc) sees the DHCP broadcast, and modifies it:

a) Adds its IP address in the <source address> field

b) Adds DHCP server address in the <destination address> field

c) Add option82 to the end of the packet containing details of where the broadcast came from (which interface, original source mac etc)

(at this stage the broadcast packet is now a unicast packet thus saving network resources)

3) Packet is then sent to server who should respond with a DHCP OFFER packet containing details of its service (IP address available, lease time etc) and OPTION 82 should e returned UNCHANGED. DHCP servers are not supposed to touch this option, just return it!

4) Relay agent recieves DHCP OFFER and can forward it as unicast packet straight to the PC that sent it based on the info in OPTION 82.

Without OPTION 82 then the packet would be broadcast on the same interface the DHCP relay agent recieved it on.

Hope that is clear....

And so far I have not found away of implementing this in windows. It just doesn't support it. It is possible to add new options - however I can't find a mechanism to tell the server to return option 82 untouched if it recieves it...

Good luck

    • Zed 1.7.2 has landed with updated OpenCode models, bug fixes and other improvements by David Uzondu Zed 1.7.2 recently landed on the stable release channel, bringing a host of AI-related features including automatic context compaction and settings-based skill management, along with other things like better Markdown preview rendering and custom git commands in the graph view. Starting with the AI stuff, the developers introduced "/compact", a command that basically summarizes your conversation history on demand. This tool prevents your active chat window from hitting token limits by compressing older parts of the dialogue into a brief overview. In addition to that, the team relocated skill management to the settings UI, improving how the application communicates errors regarding those skills, and updated the OpenCode model roster to support DeepSeek V4 Flash, MiniMax M3, Qwen 3.7 Plus, and Nemotron 3 Ultra Free. External agent users can also monitor context window cost metrics and delete individual sessions directly from their history. Right-clicking ref labels in the git graph now opens a context menu that runs different actions against selected targets, kind of how VS Code does it. Here are some of the bug fixes this new release brings: The active agent fails to auto-select when creating a new git worktree. A scrollbar unexpectedly appears on wrapped code blocks in the agent chat. Collapse indicators for project headers appear when performing sidebar searches. Bracketed ellipsis title prefixes fail to show the ellipsis icon properly. Project icons render incorrectly in the recent projects picker. Diff hunk controls appear inside non-editable commit view multibuffers. The software update button hangs indefinitely on the downloading stage. Restoring an agent terminal in a remote project triggers a sudden crash. Splitting a pane that contains an active commit view causes a crash. Linux Wayland freezes when trying to read the clipboard from laggy external apps. Zed is a "newish" code editor trying to break the massive stronghold VS Code has on the developer community. Funny enough, the editor was created by former GitHub employees who worked on the Atom text editor (which Microsoft killed in 2022, several years after it bought GitHub). The project officially hit version 1.0 back in April, introducing platform parity for Windows and Linux alongside deep support for DeepSeek-V4-Pro.
    • 26H2 absolutely will support ARM Windows just not on devices that came with 26H1. This is evident by the fact I am running 26H2, which on my MacBook Neo and Surface Pro 12 (inch), within a VM.

    • The FIFA World Cup is not US centric.
    • It’s amusing how Microsoft is pushing IT admins as if this was a major, game-changing update. In reality, it’s just an enablement package that bumps the build number, which is disappointing compared to the more substantial 22H2 and 24H2 releases. Technically, 25H2, 26H1, and the upcoming 26H2 are essentially the same, differing only in support schedules. They could have included the Windows K2 improvements here, but chose not to. The era of Windows being in the backburner continues, and this 26H2 release feels like an afterthought. Shame, Nadella, shame.
