OK so you're developing a new protocol? Have you planned this protocol and how will it work and how exactly will you instant message people with this thing? Sounds like good ideas but i think you asking for more programmers surely shows that you're not too sure on how to create this protocol.

Do you have any idea what it means if you develop a whole new protocol?

Think about security, error handling, buffering, etc, etc. You can never be sure that messages reach the other side or even in the right order. Seriously, I wouldn't even consider making a new protocol.

Just take an existing protocol, Jabber would be a good one since it is open I believe.

The point is to have a different ( than PMing ) way contacting someone! With this program or with whatever else, nothing will result to if nobody uses it! Maybe we should improve PMing by making it something a bit more instant! I say this because as the people above me said programming a new protocol isn't easy at all! :(

What language? Im relitivly profecient with Local VB (as in i havent done any web based VB, ive only seen it done.) Do you have a paticular languae made up? Or are you going to use SQL with a VB like GUI? Im willing to sign up for programming, depending on the language.

SQL is not a programming language... it's a query language.

hey jase i thought it was cancled becuse last time i checed or tryed this it was shtdown becuse nobody waned it

but any way this messenger needs to be coded to fit any IPB forum but there should be locked in links for neowin lol

ok and heres how it works

to connect and get your contact list it uses the data on ipb but when you login it also uploads your ip so when you chat to someone its a stright connection

offline messages are just the pm

the chat area would just have to be someother forum thing idk

and yeh jase knows all that so best of luck jase

...

a Neowin messenger called iMessenger... which lets you browse forums... and contains flash... and uses Neowin Message board PMs - surely then you'll need access to the Neowin database = not gonna happen.

Have you done any thinking about this project?

oh, you're coding it in VB? good luck

I could write a messenger for neowin easily, but there would need to be a program hosted on neowin.net or someones personal webspace.... hang on I have some website

ill be right back

EDIT: What am I talking about... it cannot be hosted on my personal webspace because the host program would need to be running 24/7. If anyone is up for this on a fast internet connection it would be grand. They would only need to donate the bandwidth for the sign on's and sign / offs as the chat can be IP to IP

I could also GPL the code so you can be sure in your mind that nothing dodgy is going on

    • Yeah, this is absolutely nothing new and EA have done it before. Burnout Paradise, released in 2008, had dynamic advertising billboards that were updated via the internet and targeted people based on location and what EA knew about them from their profile. It was particularly notable for the fact that the Obama presidential campaign ran ads in the game, in an attempt to reach a younger audience who didn't watch broadcast TV any more. It was by no means the first though. Battlefield 2142 from 2006 had the same thing. In fact, Neowin wrote a story about it back then. https://www.neowin.net/news/ba...-in-game-ads-clarification/
    • This is obviously aimed at the education where Apple has lost so much ground to Chromebooks in the last few years, but unless they come up with a comparable management system for education why would anyone switch back?
    • Here's how we arrived at that claim: Note that this is just Play Store downloads. The app is also available on the Galaxy App Store
    • Google Play states the app had more than 50 million downloads. What other metric do you suggest should be used?
    • MSN defined our generation in some ways, kind of like Snapchat and TikTok have done for future generations. I have great memories of the MSN era in the late 90s / early 2000s. In the UK everyone seemed to come home from School and go on MSN for the evening. We didn't really have mobile phones then, so other than going and knocking on your friends door it was a totally new way of interacting with people. I also loved how I could talk to people I’d met playing online games from around the world. Inviting people to NetMeeting and messing about with the shared white board and webcams was pretty fun, even if webcams only ran at a couple of fps over dial-up. All the random things you could do with MsgPlus! were really fun - I suspect that made a few people jump with /shello randomly blasting Mr Hankey out their speakers! Maybe I’m just nostalgic, however I do feel the internet and computers were more fun back then.
