Ok, to be honest I havnt looked through this thread until I started programming it. I was already working on a codebase of sorts anyway

To Jase: I hope you dont think im stepping on your toes - and i also hope you dont mind the neoin messenger name. As I said I really didnt realise you had started making yours

I read all the pages and I wanted to say good luck. It really sounds that this project is gonna take a while before it gets its first beta release :D

Also, I wanted to make a comment for the IM program that Jasse and the rest are building. What about NeoWIM :jump:

I am releasing a preview edition of (my version of) Neowin Messenger. This is not a fully working final product so please dont expect one. I would love some feedback on where to go on this, and if any other developers, artists, etc want to add anything feel free to say so.

What works in this very early alpha release?

Obviously nothing as much as a finished article, but enough that you can see the direction and start giving some comments back. These are some of the things that work

  • Basic GUI design
  • Sending messages over the LAN
  • Sending messages over the internet
  • Changing of nickname
  • Cool sign in animation

Here are some of the things that are intended for a later release

  • Contact list integration. This will not be the active user list
  • Neowin sign in a possability
  • Open Protocol and GPL code
  • Buddy pictures and/or neowin avatars
  • Minimise to system tray
  • Automatic updates

Where can I download this?

Download Neowin Messenger 0.1

You made need the VB runtime files. Please keep me updated if you have problems / need files to make this release work. Thanks all. -Dan

Okay guys.. I am starting on the core connection and contact list code now, and I have come accross a minor roadblock

Basically there are two ways we can go about this project, and the way we "log in". Each has their own advantages and disadvantages.

1. The Messenger program could log in with any name the user supplies, and isn't linked with a password related to neowin.net or any password at all. The advantage is that anyone could log in even if they are not a member - as you are probably thinking now this is also a major disadvantage. For instance one day I could log in as "StaticFish"and the next as "Blaise" or even "Neobond!" as nothing will be linked. Obviously this will probably be a bad idea but we will see

2. I am much more keen on the second way we could do it, but it will be a lot trickier and will involve more people, to work together. If we could somehow bind the program in with the main database, so that your personal neowin.net username and password works with Neowin Messenger. This opens up features that have been discussed early such as PM integration. There are of course limitations with the Invision Power Board, but the connections is the main point.

Some food for thought here. Coding will resume after feedback!

Cheers

Dan

U guy's are thinking way too far ahead.. if I were you i'd start off with a most simple way of messager, just so 2 persons can type to each other.. I had made such program about 2 years ago in delphi with my buddy. Though it was crappy it worked.. :pinch:

Stay with your feed on the ground, and don't start adding the most difficult features at the beginning.. this will most probably lead into a project failure.

Don't think about the UI first, start off with something simple and then slowly expand it with adding features step by step.

AthemeX.

Dont know if anybody would be interested with this, it's just a really simple network messaging program i wrote (well, not really, i based it of a toutorial i got in a magazine). Anyway, it uses old api's from 3.1, not tcp/ip so no internet version (although i have thought about re-writing it, but it's to much work), also, if you change your name to "MS Word", it enables a "boss" feature i coded in for a friend, the only way you can disable that is to close and re-open the program.

Edit:

1. yes, i do know it's crappy, but all my friends liked it :)

2. I heard MS changed the API's it uses in 2000 and beyond, when i tried it on a 2000 system (at school  ) it didnt work, but i have tried it here (XP SP1) and it does, so your luck may vary :(

3. Also, the icon in the same icon as the on-screen keyboard, i changed the hue with IconWorkshop XP, if anybody wanted to know ;) (sorry ms)

Also, just to clarify, this program is sort of connection-less, open it and your connected, close and your dissconnected, typing any message and sending it will send it to any person with the program open, or you can change the "Send To" test from "Global Message" to a user name of somebody else using it to send the message just to them. Just change it back to talk to everybody again.

iMessenger?

thats what I think about the name.

I don't really like the idea of you having access to the neowin database... :s

I think neobond needs to step up here and explian this to us.

iMessenger? It's nice and stuff.. but why follow Apple lead on using i in almost all of the products.

Neowin Messenger would be too long i must say... why not instead nMessenger or something else.. besides putting an i...

    • I really wonder if this has to do with the built in VPN or "private DNS" of browsers that trip up legal requirements like cookie consent and Cloudflare (to avoid all the botnet attacks we get). And BTW some botnets still manage to get past Cloudflare, we are constantly having to tweak it to block malicious traffic that ultimately cause a DDoS.
    • CPPC states can also be messed around with in most UEFI settings but aren't as robust as the ones that the Windows Scheduler can provide! Make sure you look into what your motherboard also has before customizing for the Windows Scheduler.
