I know noone probably reads this section, but I really need some guidance with this - so I will post it again.

Basically there are two ways we can go about this project, and the way we "log in". Each has their own advantages and disadvantages.

1. The Messenger program could log in with any name the user supplies, and isn't linked with a password related to neowin.net or any password at all. The advantage is that anyone could log in even if they are not a member - as you are probably thinking now this is also a major disadvantage. For instance one day I could log in as "StaticFish"and the next as "Blaise" or even "Neobond!" as nothing will be linked. Obviously this will probably be a bad idea but we will see

2. I am much more keen on the second way we could do it, but it will be a lot trickier and will involve more people, to work together. If we could somehow bind the program in with the main database, so that your personal neowin.net username and password works with Neowin Messenger. This opens up features that have been discussed early such as PM integration. There are of course limitations with the Invision Power Board, but the connections is the main point.

This is now almost a fully functional login box. To make it 100% working, the above stuff needs to be worked out

I was thinking about this problem. I was thinking about a possible work around... Let me know what you think.

What if we sent the person who wanted to sign up a PM on Neowin with a passcode, to verify that they are registering a Neowin account that belongs to them? This would also keep people off who don't have a Neowin account. Assuming you can't link to the Neowin database....

Same problem after installing VB6... it's got to be to do with the new security features of SP2.

theyarecomingforyou, here put it in your system 32 folder and register it

as for logging in as diferent people theres no server side database of users yet.. hence you cant log in that way

thats why he was asking for the admins help... and then the idea of confirmation pms came up..

lets see how it goes

there are a few other dll's it asks for... check bad a few pages for the other fixes

presently there are some errors with the buddy list .. so im sure they'll be fixed but a user database sever side helps too

MSInet.cab

OK im working on all the bugs...

i fixed the rename bug... im in the priocess of fixing the name merging bug

hopefully 0.1.5 will be out tonight. thanks for the feedback guys

Even better, it will automaticly detect your neowin username etc and you will be able to log in with that. Hopefully this will be done by build 0.1.6 or 0.1.7

No sweat dude.. looking forward to bug testing some more for ya ;)

im off to bed..... tis late *yawn* night

It seems I need to work on my reading skills more. However, what I was thinking is something like this:

Signin

NWM --> PHP script --> check login with neowin --> return login --> PHP script --> NWM auth'ed

Then for PMs it would be similar replacing login with PM.

Then for messenging people it could be something like this:

NWM --> PHP script --> add new message to messages DB (SQLite i'm thinking here for speed) -- > other user checks messages [or alternitvley the PHP script cold push a new message to the client. this would require tracknig of IP though] --> recieves message.

The only trouble is this would be very, very slow most likley. Assuming a latency to the server of 100ms, a message transmit time of 100ms and a query time of 100ms, that's 300ms to add the message. Then you'd have to check messages every 1 second or so which would be incredibly stressful on the server. On second thoughts, pushing the message to the client is the only way. Maybe the other method would be for offlnie storage and checked only on login time?

avoid doing the pm issue

why not do a "if true" part.. say when they log on.. it logs onto neowin with that user and pass and if.. if.. that is correct the "now logging you on" thing should show up.. just use that as the if part, then logon etc

id be worried about passwords being stored locally tho....(on the server that is)

Yes, that's exactly what I was planning to do. The PM part wouldn't be hard to do after that, assuming we have someone with l33t text parsing knowledge on here. (send HTTP request to the view PM page with a cookie of the username and password, and retrive the messages.

Anyone thought of making this opensource aswell :)?

I also think that storing the username and passwords would be a worry but as long as we got someone to run the server who was trustful, then we'd have no problems, I hope.

Maybe NeoWin could open a small API up for us so we can send md5 passwords to the server instead?

Erm... well, that got rid of the first error, now I get an "mscomctl.ocx" error upon startup. I've restarted the computer to see if that helped, but to no avail. A quick internet search shows that all the files producing problems are based around ActiveX so is it just that Microsoft has clamped down all files (I originally got a message asking if I was sure I wanted to run it, and that the Publisher information was not present).

Any help would be appreciated.

OK... solved.

I searched for "mscomctl.ocx", installed it from here: "http://www.geocities.com/nitin_speed/resources.htm".

Then I need "mswinsck.ocx", installed it from here: "http://www.runan.net/program/runtime/dl.cgi?file=mswinsck"

So, the program launched. But, when I type my username in it tells me to stop being silly and pick a shorter name.

I know it's beta, so I guess it will get fixed later. Sounds a cool idea for a program though.

    • I really wonder if this has to do with the built in VPN or "private DNS" of browsers that trip up legal requirements like cookie consent and Cloudflare (to avoid all the botnet attacks we get). And BTW some botnets still manage to get past Cloudflare, we are constantly having to tweak it to block malicious traffic that ultimately cause a DDoS.
    • CPPC states can also be messed around with in most UEFI settings but aren't as robust as the ones that the Windows Scheduler can provide! Make sure you look into what your motherboard also has before customizing for the Windows Scheduler.
