StaticFish can you please declare the status of this project?

-EnIgMa-PenGuIn

First of all, appologies for taking so long to post back here.

Secondly, I hope the project isn't dead, and i'm positive it isnt. I'm just getting ready to start a new life. I'm leaving home for University in London, at the end of September for the next three years, and I have been getting ready for it in the last few weeks. As you can imagine its a pretty big step for an 18 year old. Especially a lazy one like me ;)

At the start of October I will be fully in University life, and have a decent internet connection too. This means I will be able to get right back on the project, and hopefully we can make it the minor success it has been up to now. I have had a great time working on it, and hearing feedback from you guys - and its not going to just be terminated!

Sorry this has taken so long, and thanks for the understanding.

Watch this space!

thanks guys means a lot to me :)

NeowinMessenger has a future! Be sure of that. I was hoping to get it integrated into Aerobrowser sometime.. just seen the news :(

Just reading back a few posts.. and Yeah.. aerobrowers integration will diffinitely work now.

Wow I've read all 31 pages and I have to say...congrats staticfish, even if the project never does get finished due to workloads from uni you made it much farther than Jase. I really like the simplistic layout of the neowin messenger, unfortunatly I have not been able to connect but will try at another time....either way good job mate and congrats again on getting farther than Jase had :)

I don't feel like reading all 31 pages, but did Jase even do anything?

We can't really know for sure...by the looks of it no

Jase

Vs.

Static Fish

Jase - talked about the project...and by the seems of it did nothing but TALK

Static Fish - talked about it and made the project come alive, and above all didn't give it a stupid name like iMessanger

Jase - Showed a screenshot of it...a screenshot, that actually someone else had worked on...not him

Static Fish - No screenshot but who needs one ? he's pumped out quite a few alpha's now, again Static wins

Jase - Again with the name...iMessanger, thats one of the most blasphemous names I'd give to a messanger that is not associated with apple...ever

Static Fish - Named it so that people would definatly recognize where it came from and what its for

This is all the evidence I need to say that StaticFish pwns Jase

Guys...

Thank you all for the kind words and support through the project. I am now fairly settled in university, but there are a few roadblocks that would prohibit me developing much further (or at least at a considerable rate)

One of these things is the internet connection. Although its a fast internet DSL connection, many ports have been blocked on the university connected both internally and externally. This wouldnt normally be a problem, but as you may know, getting good packets down the highly unreliable port 80 is a nightmare. It can be done, but it would be a major step back.

Another problem (in some ways connected to the first) is that I only have access to one machine in my room now, as I left my laptop at home to save space. It is difficult to create an application like this using two machines networked; and it would be impossable to use one. Some of you may remember me private messeging you over MSN to try and get me to test something at one time. This is because I was using two machines, and I needed a third to see a certain affect, or fix a bug.

The last reason it would be hard for me to continue with the project, is the amount of work and lectures I have to attend and submit. Although I love Neowin (and this is certainly one of the best communities I have ever been part of) I cannot afford for it to take over my studies.

I would like to say a big thank you to the people who have helped me test certain features and support me through the project. These include EnIgMa-PenGuIn, and matt74441 for the great support, RSi for the bandwidth and hosting he gave to the neowin messenger server, and all of the others I have forgotten to mention. Thanks!

Finally, of course I would not like the project to completly die. Quite the contrary - I would love to be able to log into Neowin Messenger soon! So heres the deal. I'll give you the Neowin Messenger and Neowin Messenger Server VB6 source code. It's everything i wrote for the project. In return you must not complain about the bad structure, misspellings of variables, shabby code, and lack of comments! :p

Take care,

StaticFish (Dan)

Well, I will say this, You tried your best and thats all we can ask of anyone (Y).

I enjoyed testing out this software and although im sad to see it falter, its nice to see

the open source philosophy come into play.

Thanks for your all your efforts Staticfish

    • Nothing is stopping you from continuing with your testing cadence. If updates are released every 2 weeks instead of 4, and you test once every 4 weeks, the exact same amount of patches will still be available for you in those 4 weeks. For example: Before 4th week - patch 1, 2, 3, 4 After 2nd week - patch 1 and 2 4th week - patch 3 and 4 Still the same amount after 4.
    • Everyone else has said it. I'm gonna say it - you don't know what you're talking about. I do. I have two laptops. One work, one personal. I have access to two more laptops - both personal. At home I manually update my personal laptop when I see on Neowin that there is an update - I carry on and only apply the updates when I am ready. My work one only updates when my workplace decides to send it - I carry on and only apply the updates (when they actually arrive, which is usually days after the release) when I switch off the laptop at the end of the day as usual. The two other personal laptops only get updated when I get to it which is rarely - the people who own them carry on using them until I get to it and update them. All of the browsers on all laptops are configured to restore the tabs when launched. Google and Microsoft have changed from 6 weeks to 4, and it looks like it's going to move to 2. None of these changes affect how any of these browsers on the laptops are used. Not one jot. My advice to you is stop panicking whenever you see an update. Just carry on with what you're doing. This even benefits you in a way - from your comment you sound like you don't like the changes or the frivolous new features - great - then carry on as before!
    • AMAZON needs to take total accountability for this.
    • Server Summit had a heap of announcements, ADCS changes are baller.
    • Nice, hope they *finally* fixed the issue with the NTFS driver where the system would completely brick during large file copies using the built in driver. It's been broken for years requiring me to use the older, slower, NTFS-3G FUSE driver.
