What is your favorite linux file manager ?

Recommended Posts

Hey, i'm asking that cause i'm not quite happy with Nautilus, the only filemanager packaged with MDK10.

Layout is ok, but i miss some options like "display hidden files", "switch to SU privileges to edit files other than yours", "change files properties recursively" and stuff.

If you know a good prog that can handle this thing, i'm aware

Nautilus does have a "show hidden files option" in the pref box. Not sure about the other options

You could also try out the Gentoo file manager (not related to Gentoo Linux). Its not as good looking or slick, but is much more powerfull. Im not sure about some of those specific things youre asking about because there's so many options to go through!

Also nice is Rox file manager. Its lite, powerful, and looks sweet

I don't have a large breadth of Linux experience, but Konquorer does the display hidden files well.

It is lacking the "edit/open this as user xxx" feature you are searching for. I think that would be useful!

the best file manager for me is bash. end of story. there is so much more you can do with written commands in the console or a terminal that are almost impossible to emulate with a gui file-manager. and since bash is an actual programming language its power is even greater. I don't think that a gui file-manager will ever surpass the usefulness of the console. Of course it takes much more time to learn bash then for instance nautilus, but a person that knows a lot about bash is much faster and efficient at file management than one who is forced to use a gui due to lack of training.
