I started this thread because I am a Jabber enthusiast.

Jabber is a IM protocol like AIM and MSN Messenger, except it is open-source and uses many servers!

Jabber is easy to use with a variety of Jabber clients (some cross-platform and/or open-source)

Firefox and Apple have exploded in popularity in recent months and my goal is to start a revoution!!!

You see, Jabber won't be popular until it's popular! It's an IM enigma. So help me make Jabber #1 and spread the word.

Feel free to post questions and comments. I will assist you to the best of my ability.

Thanks again!!

Edit: Basically rewrote it :D

Jabber's main page is www.jabber.org Remember, you want to download a client. I use Miranda-IM at www.miranda-im.org

But there are others and that's one thing I kinda want to learn in this thread so help me out!

You'll find a list of servers Jabber uses at their page too. I just use the easiest to remember "jabber.org" If you use Miranda or most other Jabber IM clients, you'll be able to get an account of your choice on the server of your choice without filling out lengthy forms from the client's options...

Hope that helps you. Let me know how it goes, and for the rest of you IM users--- TRY JABBER DANGIT, and post how you felt about it or any questions in this form. This will help me a ton, and I hope to help you back!

I have accounts with yahoo, AIM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, and a couple of odd ball ones (like Lotus Notes Sametime) but I am willing to try Jabber at least once - major problem I have is that I hate having multiple programs running on my machine, I hat running MSN Messenger (so I run Windows messenger instead) and I absolutely positively hate not being able to run multiple logins to the same type of IM (I have 2 ICQ accounts and 4 .NET passport accounts). So, I usually run Trillian, plus 1 instance of Windows messenger for my main messenger account.

I am more than willing to try Jabber, but it would be here at work - Miranda definitely allows the multiple instance thing, but I hosed my installation by adding too many bells and whistles last I tried and it got hosed.

I know work is constantly being done on it, so I may go back and try again....

not implying anything other than my desire to re-try using it since 1) I am already familiar with the basics and how things work, and 2) I an use multiple logins to the same connection type, and 3) I realize my past mistakes.

Since Miranda supports Jabber as well, then it is a added bonus for me anyway ;-0

I was in around ver 3.0 or 3.1 i think, and it connected to everything, but 2 weeks after I hosed my install of it Yahoo changed their policies, and a *LOT* of Miranda folks (and other multiple-IM client users) all of a sudden had major problems with both yahoo and Messenger....

oops- there is a free version of Trillian, and a paid version....the free version is ltd in skinnabiltiy and some functionality, as I recall (I use free at work and *cough cough* the other at home) but I need something that is reliable *and* not patched so I can upgrade at will. hence, my desire to re-try Miranda.

I use gaim for my IM client and it has the ability to use the Jabber protocol (on top AIM/ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, and two other oddball ones I never heard of, on top of allowing you to use IRC as well) but nobody I IM use the Jabber protocol so I don't use it. Like it was stated it won't be popular until it's popular and nobody will use it until everybody uses it. It's quite an enigma and I would like to see more people using it since it is a nice idea.

    • Windows 11 KB5094126 BSODing, freezing, forcing BitLocker lockout, breaks OneDrive, and more by Sayan Sen Microsoft released Windows 11 KB5094126 and KB5093998 last week as the latest Patch Tuesday updates. Following that the company also published the accompanying dynamic updates under KB5094149, KB5095971, and KB5094156. While Microsoft has so far not acknowledged any major problems with the release, some users online are running into problems. These range from OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, BitLocker recovery lockouts, to blue screens and BSODs. The most common one seems to be happening with HP systems wherein affected users say they hit 0xc0430001 BSOD (blue screen of death) error code after the KB5094126 update. We wonder if this could be related to the recent bug we covered on HP devices wherein the ongoing Secure Boot certificate updates are leading to similar issues. While we are not certain, users affected by this issue likely need to ensure that the boot.stl file is included on the installation media (such as a USB installer or ISO), if the above-mentioned dynamic updates are deployed. If this file is missing, computers may fail to boot from the installation media and could display the error 0xc0430001. This STL file is used by Secure Boot to verify that the boot files are trusted, so it must match the same Windows version and system architecture. To ensure the file is included, Microsoft recommends using the Update WinPE script, which automatically updates the image and handles the required files. Alternatively, you can manually copy the boot.stl file from the Windows\Boot\EFI folder on a Windows device and place it in the matching folder on your installation media before deploying the updated image. Aside from blue screening some users also note their systems have been freezing following the update. This could be happening to Lenovo PCs specifically. In the case of the OneDrive and Dropbox access issues, a user figured out that there could be a conflict with UAC. He explained: "Okay, so I did some digging, and in our environment KB5094126 breaks OneDrive and Dropbox in Explorer. I went through all our GPOs and found out that the combination of disabling UAC and having my user being a local admin breaks OneDrive in Explorer. ... If I enable UAC again, then it works, even with KB5094126 still installed." Hopefully, Microsoft will look into these issues. • It is when it's a desktop in my house though for a PC that's lightly used and not really important when it is. If it was a laptop, it would be a different story. The real solution is varied and begins starting at post #22 in that thread.
