Win 2000 - Active Directory Computer Management

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been playing around with Active Directory for past few days and i just want to know whether it's possible to view which softwares are installed in each user's machine so that i can remove unwanted softwares from their machines (user wise).

is there any inbuilt feature or something?

There might be something in Group Policy under software installation

i found these columns..

Name - Version - Deployment State - Auto Install - Upgrade Type - Upgrading - Locale - Source - Modifications

i know there is something but dont know where is it coz i had seen something like that in one of the Microsoft demo vidoes but there also they didnt show the location of the tool :(

let me know if anyone knows it..

That is only possible if you want to manage software installed by group policy, the answer to your question would be Microsoft SMS Server.

ok cool but does it mean that its not possible win 2000 or win 2003 to do it?

and one more thing i want to ask is.. update management..

i saw this feature in SMS but again can it be possible with Win 2000 or 2003 ?

If you mean Windows update management, Software Update Services is available in a feature pack available for download at Microsoft's Site

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...&DisplayLang=en

It can be installed on Windows 2000 or 2003

SMS is not for the faint of heart, it has a pretty steep learning curve, as well as lofty hardware requirements. Its an enterprise management tool.

If all you want is hardware inventories, you might look at something like AIDA32. For patches, check out HFNETCHK Pro. Both of these are free (hfnetchk is free for scanning use). My favorite to use to get a full software inventory though is the pstools collection. It has a program called PSINFO that will tell you virtually everything about a computer, and is free as well.
