I've got a newbie question, if you will, so please bear with me. I am using WindowBlinds 4.3 By disabling Microsoft's Theme Service will I notice any speed increase on my computer?

It depends on your system.

If you have a lower end system...say sub 1.5 Ghz with around 256 ram and 32 mb gfx card...then yes you will see a noticeable difference.

But if you have a high end machine...say >2 Ghz and over 512 MB and 64 MB gfx card....then it won't be so noticeable.

exactly (Y)

turn it off!

The only problem I have had when turning the Themes service off was that everytime I went into Display properties to make changes for the 3d settings etc in the ATI control panel, any WB theme I had applied would revert back to windows classic, I also could not apply any WB themes when the service was disabled unless I used WindowBlinds its :(

It was a right pain in the a**e so I just turned it back on again, I did contact Stardock, but all I kept getting back were automated mails saying to resend the problem if the basic guidelines given in the mail was no help, it was just an endless circle :(

There seemed to be a few people in the stardock irc channel who had the same problem too frease, but the only solution they said was contact support via email, which I gave up on after about 5 resends/forwards of the same mail :(

Don't talk about email.. I can't even access the stardock newgroups :( I hope they do something about their products cos' so many people paid for it. At least, they should improve their support service.

I am on the newsgroups right now....no problem at all.

Did you configure the news reader right. It is news.stardock.com

Thanks AthleticTrainer1981, I forgot about the newsgroups, mainly as I use Agent instead of OE (eek, horrible software) and could never get it to connect to the stardock servers, it never occured to me to remove the news:\\ part, which is now working, after making a stardock folder of course :)

Thanks again, I have now posted my message on there ...

it usually slows down mah system , so i use msstyles instead .

excellent contribution to a thread about windowblinds and the theme service...

sheesh... no wonder i drink

If you use WB... disable the theme service, there's no need for it as WB takes over from where the uxtheme.dll takes off

I have an "old" machine... just a slummy P4 3.06ghz with HT, with a gig of ram, a 265mb nvidia FX card, and believe me... it does make a difference if you disable the service... not enough to be "instantly" noticeable"... but you will notice it when it counts...

    • You are clueless. The updates are done in the background so the next time you open Edge the updates are applied automatically. There is no need to close all your tabs. Just keep browsing like you normally do. Clearly you don't use Edge and are just one of those haters that complain for the sake of complaining.
    • I don't get this David. Can you explain it please.
    • Microsoft is busy. Lots of changes to be released imminently for Windows server or soon. Also, lots happening for next version as well. Third party virus scanning software is being moved out of Kernel mode to avoid repeat of Crowdstrike incident. Windows Protected Mode and Windows Ready Print no longer require third party print drivers to be installed. New storage stack being developed. New NVME drivers now available for Windows Server 2025 to improve local NVME drive performance by 60+ percent. NVME-Of of fabric being worked on for next release to improve network access to NVME drives. ReFs (next file system) now has ability to boot and will become default file system in next release of Windows Server. ReFs improves on NTFS in several areas including resiliency and reliability and scalability. New update stack is being worked on to unify Windows updates, and updates for drivers and first party/3rd party application software. A stricter and more robust third-party driver certification program (ODI) is being worked on to improve performance, thermals, battery life, and reliability on modern Windows hardware by tightening how OEMs and IHVs (Intel, AMD, Qualcomm, NVIDIA, etc.) build and ship drivers. There is a tone more but too numerous to mention.
    • Now disable that stupid OneDrive backup request when Windows starts please. So unbelievably frustrating to only have “remind me later” instead of “no and never ask me again”
    • Hello, The Media Creation Tool is still at v10.0.26100.7019 from October 2025. Just looks like the backend has been updated. Regards, Aryeh Goretsky
