Hello,

I have problems sharing my internet connection (adsl) through NAT. I have already used Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) but I heard it doesnt provide you with much options and security. So I switched to NAT and I cant make it work. (ICS is now disabled)

I configured, DHCP, DNS, setup an internal domain (as I dont have a public domain). They are working fine.

I try opening routing and remote access, install NAT/firewall, both public and private interface. I do not choose the option of DNS/DCHP allocator through NAT as I have already done through DHCP and DNS itself. Or am I doing something wrong here. I can use the internet on my server itself but cannot share it for some reason.

Help would be appreciated.

Background Info:

Small office network

Server: 1 x w2k3 - IP 192.168.0.1

clients: 2 x winxp - IP 192.168.0.2-3

Do you have two NIC in your Server?

If you do then you need to set the Wan interface to DHCP and the LAN interface to Static

then you need to configure routing between both interface

If you have one interface

Then you need another interface

If you have all this configure

Then post more information about your routing configuration

Have fun!!!

Yes, I got an ADSL modem and a LAN card on my server. Connected to other clients through a hub.

My LAN, file sharing is all working fine. Its just the internet connection sharing through NAT that I cant seem to do. Previously I've been using ICS and it all worked fine.

Yes I am having a static IP for my server. 192.168.0.1 and its my default gateway, dhcp, dns server as well.

You can do it with one nic, but you have to assign static ip addresses and your ISP must give you a static IP (simply assign two IP to the one nic one external and one internal). Of coyrse you could also just go out and buya $40 router which would share your internet through NAT and take the overhead off of your internet server.

    • Of course there are distros that are more beginner (an actual word) friendly and have less setup/configuration out of the box. This is really your argument? There is no reason to be mad because someone said they wouldn't recommend your favorite distro to a certain type of user. Are you committed to revenge now even if it takes a lifetime or something? LOL As a community we really need to move past this. New Linux users need to be helped. In the Linux subreddits the advise is even worse. So many come asking what distro to use. Sometimes they don't mention what they use their computer for and there will be 20 comments of not one person asking that and just listing the distro they personally use. That helps no one. One pet peeve of mine is sometimes one will ask what DE they should use for distro and mention they have been using Windows for 30 years. GNOME is not the damn answer! That doesn't mean GNOME is not a good DE. Understand what I am saying?

    • N97? Since it has same limitations as N100, those two M.2 slots have to run at x1, right? The Aoostar WTR Pro, the N100/N150 is a lot cheaper than this. Buy barebones and throw your own RAM (despite the price hikes in the last 2 months). Sure, it only has one 2280 slot, but it has a WiFi E key slot you can use for a boot drive with a 2 dollar adapter. The Ryzen 5825U model has two 4 lane NVMe slots (plus that E key slot) and still costs less than this. Right now, on their site, the barebones Ryzen model is 370 dollars. It doesn't come with an Unraid license, true, but that might be a plus if you don't intend to use it. Why this wall of text? Just in case someone wants to buy a semi DYI 4 bay NAS, there are cheaper options.
    • Those are the big MMOs. What else is there, Infinity Nikki and Genshin Impact? Those work too. Of course some professionals will come up with edge cases where a specific software function is needed but what most people do at their desk jobs is no problem.
