Disappointing week for Firefox...

Question

The creator of the current Firefox default theme has posted that the Firefox devs will stop using his theme in favor of something more "uniform" and "free" across all supported platforms...meaning that they want to keep Firefox from looking too much like IE6 and also to create a "brand identity" that people will "recognize" across all platforms for Firefox and Thunderbird.

The change will occur this week...and will be the default for 0.9. I really hate this. Qute looks so great right now and I really wish they had pursued a better design. I'm sure you guys will agree that other themes will definitely have to be used once this monstrosity comes out in wide release the 12-14th. I am happy to report that Arvid will keep Qute alive for Firefox and will make it available as a theme for download.

Here's the original post. People are adding negative comments as we speak.

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=82385

...and here is what is coming for 0.9, as checked into the branch builds.

UPDATE: TODAY'S 6/07 NIGHTLY BRANCH BUILD NOW HAS THE NEW THEME, AS PICTURED BELOW. TEST AWAY, POST COMMENTS, ETC.

Update: Lead programmer Ben Goodger says that the theme I have shown you is indeed what will come out for 0.9, but it will receive "additions, change, and polish" before 1.0 comes out. Apparently, what I have shown you in my first post is something that was worked on extensively in a short period of time to get it out for 0.9. We are seeing the theme in its rough form so far, so we will definitely have something shinier to play with when 1.0 beta hits.

By the way, the official name of this theme is "Winstripe."

So if they do a 'Linstripe' for the Linux port, will they get sued?

Well. guess what? They already thought of that. Linux port will be known as "Gnomestripe" I kid you not. It's already in bonsai to be checked in this week.

Also, word in the forums is that the theme I showed you is not gonna change all that much. People are saying that this will affect the way people see Firefox and many will be turned off by it. In case you are wondering, the change resulted from disagreements with the Mozilla people and the author of the original Qute theme. They had some licensing issues, so now us windows users will have to play with this mac-derived theme. (Pinstripe is the mac version)

ALSO...EXPECT THUNDERBIRD to change its default theme as well VERY SOON. The licensing issue affects it as well. Expect there to be Winstripe on both Firefox and Thunderbird by the end of the month.

If you're using a new build with the theme manager, just drag and drop...? I'm assuming it can now install several themes at once.

drag n drop into theme manager? you mean the theme tab in option window? drag and drop the .jar into that window nor firefox main window didn't work for me.... mind to elaborate?

They are crap. I still think that Firebird 0.7 was the best apart from the default Icon. I really hate the download manager in 0.8, and the new 0.9 iconset is looking really gay.

I think they should have Netscape Navigator 1.x-4.x inspired icons as that's what Mozilla/Netscape7/Firefox/Gecko is based on.

I hate the stop icon the most.

*Edit: The theme manager isn't an extension...

Its in this screenshot... https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?show...0entry2227858

I'm getting tired of this now... Lets all save the moaning and bitching until we see the new theme in action.

Its also his right to ignore you.

what's the use in crying about it? If he doesn't like it, don't use it. He sits there and complains how since 0.7, it's been getting worse and worse yet he still uses it when there are other viable alternatives that may better suit his needs. If you don't like something, do something about it instead of just sitting there and bitching about it.

My comment was left to him and he can answer for himself, he's a big boy and doesn't need you getting involved. Go back to spreading more incorrect information.

It's an option, but as a fellow Firefox user, you know how hard it would be to give up this program. I myself tend to try to double click when I'm in my university library using IE. No software is perfect and even the most ardent users of Photoshop have grievances with it, for example.

What would you like him to do? He's a user. He can't do anything but stop using it and he doesn't have to because of a few weaknesses.

Also, I have theright to defend him as much as you have a right to critizize him. Just because you are a mod doesn't mean you can manipulate our everyday discourse to whatever benefits you the most. Police me when I break a rule, don't tell me what who I can and cannot support. And tell me one piece of misinformation I have spread.

show me how firefox has shed an addition 1.5mb, like you stated, after the initial .5mb drop followed by a .1mb increase. Also, show me how thunderbird will be consolidating all inboxes, automatically, into one inbox like IE has it, like you said.

If he is having so many problems with a product, then it isn't right for his needs and he should look elsewhere. Unlike most Firefox fanboys, I know it's not for everyone and I won't force it upon everyone. Some people have needs that browsers such as Opera or a shell like MyIE2 would better take care of than Firefox does.

another quick question...

bangbang023 how to use your build? i extracted the files to a firefox folder and executed firefox.exe but nothing came up, is there something else i need to do before i fire it up?

what CPU do you have? You need to have a processor that fully supports SSE2.

I think they will fit well with Luna (which most XP users will probably be running anyway) and at the same time look sufficiently different from IE as to be obviously a different program to an average joe user.

I think you have a very valid point. I may not personally like the theme and, for my mom's sake, will have to install the Qute them on the fmaily computer, but most users may just find it a better match for their system.

    • low latency mode is still bugged and causing bootup times slow to a crawl. To fix, you have to disable the feature with vivetool. Seems as though it's not rolled out to a lot of people yet since I've only been able to find only a handful of people that are having issues.
    • I would recommend the Nothing 2a. The battery life is awesome, 2 or 3 days without going into battery power mode. The only thing that I've been looking into recently is that it doesn't "support" Graphene OS. I'm pretty sure there is a way, I just need to do some more looking.
    • You'd have to show me an example of a listing that says Gen 1, usually i'd expect that to mean Snapdragon Gen 1 (a type of chipset, which the Pixels don't use). Pixel 7 - White - 128gb - Unlocked - 85%+ battery - Grade B+ - $159 with free delivery - https://www.ebay.com/itm/398046617206 Pixel 7 - Obsidian - 128gb - Unlocked - 80%+ battery - Very Good - $157 with free delivery - https://www.ebay.com/itm/355617734563 Both look to be sold by companies with good feedback, dealing with refurbished phones and state the phones are unlocked with a clean IMEI. Obviously I can't vouch for either company though, but the listings look good in my opinion.
    • Because Chrome is doing it. And no one said anyone had to update immediately. That's silly. They could update every day for all I care as long as it's fast, and the next time the browser restarts, you're good. And the basic point is not to tee it up for bigger updates. As it is right now, all the windows I had open reopen anyway except inprivate.
    • Why? Does anybody actually want this? The constant need to close all browser sessions and wait for a new version to install, just so that there’s a integrated coupon manager feels like a waste of everyone’s time
