Disappointing week for Firefox...

Question

The creator of the current Firefox default theme has posted that the Firefox devs will stop using his theme in favor of something more "uniform" and "free" across all supported platforms...meaning that they want to keep Firefox from looking too much like IE6 and also to create a "brand identity" that people will "recognize" across all platforms for Firefox and Thunderbird.

The change will occur this week...and will be the default for 0.9. I really hate this. Qute looks so great right now and I really wish they had pursued a better design. I'm sure you guys will agree that other themes will definitely have to be used once this monstrosity comes out in wide release the 12-14th. I am happy to report that Arvid will keep Qute alive for Firefox and will make it available as a theme for download.

Here's the original post. People are adding negative comments as we speak.

...and here is what is coming for 0.9, as checked into the branch builds.

UPDATE: TODAY'S 6/07 NIGHTLY BRANCH BUILD NOW HAS THE NEW THEME, AS PICTURED BELOW. TEST AWAY, POST COMMENTS, ETC.

Off Topic : bangbang023, just tried your latest build and it seems much faster for me than the official ones. Thanks a lot! (Y)

(And I like the throbber it uses, too!)

Thanks. Once the trunk catches up to aviary, I'll go back to building the trunk, but right now I'd rather use a more complete aviary. Just so you know, for testing, use the following page. You should download it and run it locally. On my p4 2.0, I get about 3.2 seconds, but have gone as fast as 2.9. Others get even faster than that, with better processers of course.

i see, but i thought firefox has faster render engine? as all those people were taking about faster page loading and such....

It is most likely the placebo effect. Fx isn't much slower and I use it more for it's features than it's speed, anyway. Remember, that test only, also, tests rendering of 5,000 tables which contain purely text.

Also, word in the forums is that the theme I showed you is not gonna change all that much. People are saying that this will affect the way people see Firefox and many will be turned off by it. In case you are wondering, the change resulted from disagreements with the Mozilla people and the author of the original Qute theme. They had some licensing issues, so now us windows users will have to play with this mac-derived theme. (Pinstripe is the mac version)

So are you saying that there is infighting between Mozilla and the FireFox people? Personally, I like Mozilla more than FireFox because Moz is a fully integrated setup, which I prefer. But I had not thought that there was infighting going on. Is there?

Not infighting. The Qute theme was created by a third party themer. This is what worried them. They wanted to be able to hold liscencing rights to the theme they use also. I don't blame them either.

Umm... Dude...

It's a browser.

Say it with me, now...

"It's a browser. It displays web pages."

I think there may have been some disagreement between the author and the Firefox developers. It sounds as if the licensing issues had to do with using Qute on OSX - the original author denied the devs the right to do that, which is why Pinstripe was made. And ever since, they've been looking for a way to get exclusive rights to a default theme, an offer which Qute's author never expressed until he got notification that Firefox would be having a new default theme.

This change won't affect me because I have the ability to download other themes and install them. I feel sorry for the people too stupid to do so, but hey, that's life. If you wanna keep complaining about it, go ahead. I laugh at stupid people.

    • When will the Photos app be updated to remember the window size and position when reopened? They addressed this issue in a 2024 version of the app (though I can't recall the build number). Unfortunately, after that specific version, the problem persists! Please prioritise this fix in your K2 schedule. Additionally, the Snipping Tool has lost the ability to capture the Windows Taskbar starting from the 2024 version!

    • Anthropic pulls Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after US export control order by Pradeep Viswanathan In April this year, Anthropic launched the Claude Mythos Preview frontier model with state-of-the-art cyber and coding capabilities for a select set of companies around the world. After preparing appropriate guardrails, early this week, Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most capable AI models. Claude Fable 5 is for general users and comes with strict safeguards, while Mythos 5 is designed with fewer safeguards for cybersecurity and biology use cases. Today, Anthropic abruptly suspended access to its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models for all customers after receiving an export control directive from the US government. The company received the directive from the government today at 5:21 p.m. ET, and the received letter did not provide any details regarding the national security concern. Anthropic understands that the government became aware of a method to bypass, or “jailbreak,” Fable 5, which might be the reason behind the directive. The order was issued under national security authorities and requires the company to suspend all access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national, whether they are inside or outside the United States. The restriction also applies to foreign national employees working at Anthropic. As a result, the company has disabled both models for all customers to ensure compliance. Access to previous Anthropic models like Opus and Sonnet is not affected by this government order. The company highlighted that it had developed strong safeguards to reduce the possibility that Fable is misused for tasks related to cybersecurity. In fact, many developers are complaining that the safeguards are going overboard. Additionally, the company worked with the US government, the UK AISI, multiple private third-party organizations, and internal teams to red-team Fable’s safeguards for thousands of hours. Finally, Anthropic noted that no testers have yet been able to find a universal jailbreak on Fable 5. As expected, Anthropic disagrees that a narrow potential jailbreak should lead to the recall of a commercial model used by hundreds of millions of people. It warned that applying this standard across the AI industry could effectively halt new frontier model deployments. Anthropic concluded by mentioning that it is working to restore access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 as soon as possible and plans to share more details within the next 24 hours.
