BTX, PCI Express and Socket 939?

Recommended Posts

But remember that BTX is an idea from INTEL and that AMD doesn't have to make the jump. I even heard that there are some problems withe the posititioning of the AMD hardware elements (CPU mainly) on a BTX based board becuase of the HyperTransport feature or something like this....

very soon? man i don'tthink we wil see them till late Q3 or beginning of Q4:(:(

didn't AMD promise S939 cpu's in stores by the end of June? As well as ATI promised PCI-E boards for end of June beginning July, so we gotta get new stuff by then, since all PCI-E motherboards are with S939 for AMD (everything shown at CeBIT and Computex is at least)

amd is sticking to atx for a while from what i've read, intel is going to btx toward the end of 04, beginning of 05, pci express is supposed to be very very soon, and 939 should be in the next few months (i've seen some online stores taking pre-orders for an MSI 939 board)

But, that leads to another question, I've seen some sites listing 940 socket boards, but no boards in the listing? Are these 939's or something completely different?

Do you have a source on this? thanks

The positioning of components in the BTX standard does not allow for AMD's Athlon 64 architecture since the memory controller is on the die; it's a design problem. BTX was designed to address the heat problems Intel is currently facing with it's Prescott cores. The layout allows for better cooling and increased heat allowances for the motherboards. AMD doesn't really need this atm.

AMD doesn't like BTX because the memory modules are too far away from the CPU which makes it complicated.

The memory modules will be close to the northbridge, where Intel still have their memory controller.

The motherboards layout will become more complex with BTX.

(for systems that has the memory controller in the CPU)

Hey,

I'm looking to lay down some serious cash to put together a high performance gaming system soon and I'm just wondering when BTX, PCI Express and Socket 939 Motherboards coming out?!?!?!

Personally if you want a killer i would suggect you to weight untill Iwill DK8E That Support PCIe With Dual Opteron and 64bit all the new goodies , (Thats What I'm Weight For My New System) :) heres a pic of the Iwill motherboard

Ahh, I was just wondering about the same thing.

My question is, when would be the best time to buy a new AMD system? (PCI-E, 939, 64bit, DDR2 etc.)

I've had my current system for 3 years, and I really want to get a new one (upgrading is not an option, since I would have to replace every single part anyway).

I really want a new computer that will last me for another 3 years :).

The most futureproof i believe would be either a 939 mobo/cpu with a pci-e vid card and some DDR (the normal ones) ram or some of the new intel cpu's on socket 775 with DDR2 (since it takes advantage of it) and a pci-e video card. since it must be futureproof, try to get your hands on a dual-layer dvd burner too, when the faster ones come out.

    • No. 1/10th the cost of a Mac? The Mini starts at 599. What mini-pc costs 1/10th of that? The OS is nothing like macOS. Sure you can make it look like it, but it won’t work anything like it. Applications won’t install, or remove the same. Application compatibility will be different. Managing the OS is completely dissimilar, the biggest common ground will be a few CLI utilities. You can definitely get yourself an inexpensive little setup that has a good Linux distro and be happy. It won’t be 1/10th the cost or essentially a Mac though.
