Neowin System Build Guides

Recommended Posts

This came from another post on Neowin. Here's the link: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=177205

So, since I've never posted a thread quite like this, I think we'll start by setting a buget. This week, we want to build a gaming machine for under $1500. This post will work by posting components. Be sure to include the place where you found the item with its price. At the end of the week, I'll post a poll on the parts and do a review of all the components listed. Each week, i'll start another post.

Rule#1: No flaming or complaining about the posts.

Rule#2: Submit ONLY complete system configurations.

Rule#3: Include the website where you found the part and its price.

Thanks and post soon.

To make this simple, I'll limit the posts to only Pentium 4 Components, since they have better performance.

You may may start a flame war saying that Pentium 4 is all thats allowed, but thats just me.

i find that rather limiting too.... but its your choice.. the amds would save your ass if your on a budget.... but hey

grab a 2.4 or 2.8c some ddr400 and an ic7 max 3 mobo..

then look at an amd mobile 2500 some ddr 400 and an nf7-s mobo... get some decent cooling and you can oc nice and far

throw on a ati radeon 9600 xt or i dunno a 9800 pro

which one comes out cheaper my friend... your "guide" is flawed... i suggest you alter it

And then add the prices together, and you'll see a big difference in just the mobo + cpu + ram department.

well considering the mobile 2500 doesnt really need the 3200 you could reduce costs even futher...(but it works well for great oc's) but yeah.. agreed homer

Yeah as some people might simply want to buy the cpu for the reduced heat output and power usage. EG. if electricty costs a lot and your comp is in a small room, thats when a mobile cpu looks nice.

Okay Okay..... My idea was to limit the proc specs to one structure per week and change the structure every week. But I can go both ways. I run AMD processors. Thats why i chose Intel. I figured it would give me a chance to see the other side of the force.

Okay... Posts can use any architecture they want. Sorry to upset everybody

I'll Save you the trouble.

Pentium 4 3.0C

OCZ EL PC 3500 2x512MB

Abit AI7

Maxtor 160gb SATA hdd

Leadtek Geforce FX 5900XT

NEC-2500A 8x DVD-R/RW

Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS

Antec Sonata Case

Antec True430 PSU

Logitech MX-510 Mouse

Logitech Elite USB Keyboard

Creative Inspire 6700 Speakers

Viewsonic 19" Black CRT

That all is damn close to 1500 bucks :p I'll conjure up my Athlon XP and Athlon 64 offerings soon seeing as I normally reserve them for dream systems :p (The A64s that is)

I guess this idea really blew the big one. I'll try to think of a better way to implement it. Then maybe i'll try again.

I didn't intend to start a flame war over which proc is the best. At least Ecander got the right idea and posted something. That's the only way this kind of thing works. I hope Aldo has better luck than i did. Maybe i'll try again later.

i would have prefered scenario based .. i mean if you gave most of us a scenario you could include such things as.. the user wishes to only use intel.. you ciuld add graphics contraints etc

how about something like that

I tried that and started a flame war over what was better AMD or Intel. So I changed the post to include all systems.

Sorry, but I have to be somewhat in tune with what people want. I wanted to make restrictions but that didn't fly with the users.

    • It's a Developer Beta 1 not even a Public or User Beta, I doubt any of the design is 100% finalized yet.
    • Was going to comment the same thing. It's SO annoying to have to go back to settings every time I install something new or some apps like discord update and the icon is hidden again.

    • Shouldn't using "High Performance" mode prevent c-states from initializing? Maybe AMD hasn't built a proper power plan for their x3d processors like they used to for their ryzen chips.
