I am looking at getting this monitor http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-014-053&depa=1 since the price it seems cannot be beat for what it the specs are saying. The one question I have is whether it is a good idea to have a LCD without DVI inputs? I am not entirely sure on the differences between DVI and normal D-Sub connections are other than the DVI can send more data (i think). I am looking to order 3 of these babies so I want to make sure I get a good monitor. And stop recommending the 172X ;) I know it is awesome but it is too steep for what the screens are used for (1 is for a real gamer, the rest are for homework use aka siblings)

The D-Sub is analog and the DVI is Digital. However that pretty much means nothing. If you don't have DVI on your vid cards then don't bother.

I have DVI connectors, etc.

BTallack is it worth the price increase for DVI? Are there ever models that dont utilize DVI fully? (kind of like ATA drives that are just updated to accept SATA adapters but dont utilize the transfer speed increase)

Would the clarity with a standard D-Sub be the same as with my current CRT's?

I am willing to sacrafice some preformance in order to save $200 (instead of getting a 172X) I just dont want to get this thing and feel like it is just crap. I am perfectly fine if this will preform like my CRT currently does. I am just looking for something that will suit my needs for gaming, programming, and web surfing. (I only game about 5 hours a week if that now days)

This may be an easier request. Can someone tell me a good TFT to get in the price range of ~$400 or less. Keep in mind I use the monitor for programming, web surfing, email, and some gaming/DVD (dont need speakers built in, and I only game ~5 hours a week). I have been trying to find a monitor to fit my needs for 2 weeks now and have yet to find one. I admit it....I AM A TFT NEWBIE! :(

ditto, DVI is such a huge improvement over analog VGA... the image is so much crisper and sharper, i would never go back

Sure , the price for DVI capabilities is different ( but not so much ) .. and sure there's a difference .. ( image quality )

1. Almost all new videocards have DVI & VGA connectors ..

2. You can find new Samsung ( not 172X ) LCD's ( V series ) without DVI support

3. [ good TFT to get in the price range of ~$400 or less=Samsung 173V .. or HP ( any model ) .

I have that exact same monitor, but black/silver...

I dont notice a different using analog compared to digital using me 9800 pro with that monitor or others that have DVI inputs...

I personally, wouldn't worry about it....still a crystal clear image, and a wonderful monitor for not a ton of money....

also, very good at games as ghosting is not even noticeable.

If you really want to see that last tiny .1mc hair on the ass of your naked friend in one of your pictures, sure go for DVI but I'm using analog and I don't see why I should of payed more for DVI when I'm more than satisfied with this.

you people focus too much on specs and what the company gives you. specs specs specs. This is why I never run gay benchmarks or trust a product just by the specs written in pure text. The way to be convinced is to actually TRY the damn thing.

I bought an LCD over a year ago, the NEC 1760V. My eyes were freaking out on my 21" CRT I was crying from radiation. It was one of the few lcd's which had 16ms of pixel reponse. This is the only piece of spec that I cared since I do lots of fast gaming (quake 3, UT, etc.) and ghosting was a concern. Went to FutureShop (BestBuy in U.S) and I tried it and I checked that indeed it didn't have a DVI. OH ITS THE END OF THE WORLD!!!!!! right? wrong you noob. I still tried it I asked the dude to install a game so I could be convinced and the quality of the image and animations and textures were uncomparable with the human eye. You could put a CRT of 21" next to my lcd, put quake 3 on both screens (and I did it) and I won't notice a difference. Basically what does that mean? that specs mean nothing? or that people base their opinion on a product by looking just at the specs? The only time i see the difference between crt and lcd is when I scroll a webpage becomes almost impossible to read the text but who's the maniac out there who reads while he scrolls at 100MPH you tell me? bring him to me! (waiting.... and waiting...).

I proved my point I think. After looking at a screen's specs. If most of what it offers are interesting, EVEN IF ONE makes you wonder if it sux, still give it a try if its posible. Go to any fkn retail store and give it a whirl you might be surprised. I was surprised at my friend's lcd which is a 25ms and he also plays fast game. He gets no ghosting effects just like me but my pixel reponse is faster... heh figures.

    • That would be nice, if excel could refresh pivot tables without bugs. Frequently you refresh a pivot and all parameters get lost. Now this will happen automatically. Bravo MS!

    • PSA: Some other versions of Windows are losing support on October 14 too by Usama Jawad All of us here at Neowin likely know pretty well by now that Windows 10 is reaching end of support on October 14, 2025. You can extend support through paid and "free" means, but if you don't, you won't get any more security or feature updates following the aforementioned date. We also highlighted that the Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) version Windows 10 22H2 is also reaching end of support on that date. Now, Microsoft has reminded customers that yet another variant of Windows is reaching end of life on October 14, 2025 too. On the Windows Release Health dashboard, Microsoft has published a reminder that the Enterprise, Education, and IoT SKUs of Windows 11, version 22H2 will hit end of support on October 14 as well. It is important to keep in mind that the Home and Pro variants of Windows 11, version 22H2 already reached end of life on October 8, 2024, and the extra year of lease on life will end for other SKUs within a few months too. Windows 11, version 22H2 for IoT, Enterprise, and Education was released on September 20, 2022, which means that they would have received just over three years of support by the time they "die", compared to the regular two years for Home and Pro. Customers on any of these versions should consider upgrading to version 23H2 or 24H2 as soon as possible, which have end of support dates of November 10, 2026 and October 12, 2027, respectively. Staying on a supported version of Windows is crucial as that allows you to receive regular security updates on your machine. If you're an IT admin, you should immediately begin planning a migration to a supported version of the operating system, and if you're an employee or someone using these versions of Windows in some other scenario, go to Settings > System > About and check out Windows Specifications > Version.
