how can i play .dat video file?

hello i amn trying to play .dat file in wmp. it;s not working

i tried in divx and real player too. not working. what should i do in order to play .dat file

i am using windows media player 10.

any ideas? :pinch:

Rename it to .mpg,.mpeg,.avi or another movie extension and then open it...

You can play .dat files using VLC http://videolan.org/vlc/, it plays anything you pretty much throw at it.

I think you can open it with WMP. Just go File > Open > and change file format to *.* and choose the .dat file. It worked for me.

if the file misses the header (in other words, incomplete download) there's nothing you can do... WMP and other players dont give a damn what the extension is... They always go by the file header... if its not there they can't play it...

Alternatively you can open dat files in any of the dvddecoders like powerdvd or windvd etc. :D

Im pretty sure you can play .dat files in AVI Preview that comes with Kazaa Lite.

it works in there. but i still can't play this dat files in wmp , real player and divx.

if its full, use wmp still. Just change the file type to *.*

Is it MPEG1 or MPEG2 video? My guess, MPEG2. Do you have a software DVD decoder installed?

You can also use any DVD application (WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc)

Since is was already stated he is trying to use WMP, Real, Divx - Giving the use MPC isn't really helping out.

If you havent solved ur problem, try loading ur file into a program called Gspot it will tell you what format it is, and the codecs (if any) you need.

Also you might want to try loading it into a program called Divfix, if it is an incomplete .avi file it will rebuild the index for you. :)
