EverQuest Visual Style for Windows XP

Updated 7/12/04

-----

7/9/04: I have always wanted a theme based on the "new" in-game interface, but I could never find anything close. I have finally (after not even playing EQ for like 2 years) broke down and begun on my quest. I have never skinned anything before (besides some minor game skins), so please be gentle. It is my first VS so I decided to take it easy and just modify Luna. I just started, so the only parts that are done are in the picture. On a side note, would I be able to release a mod of Luna as long as EVERYTHING was skinned?

-----

7/12/04: I have just finished the bulk of the theme and would like to share a screenshot. It's a little rough because I have not gotten down to all the details yet, but it's very usable and closer to completion than before.

-----

Please give me your comments, good or bad, so I know what to change!

Also, mods if you will, please delete my last post on this thead. I have consolidated to my top post.

Thanks for the quick response! As a matter of fact, I am basing everything on experience and screenshots. It's just I can't mod Luna enough in the Start menu portion to look like EQ. I'm working on the windows themselves right now and they work much better. After all the EQ GUI only has windows, not a taskbar and "start menu." I'll try to post some better screenshots when I get a little further through this weekend.

how about using some ideas from other areas of the game.. this from Everquest 2

i see now why the theme is black because of the black transparent windows

see here:

Look for other characteristics though, other than just black transparancy windows.. how ever, im a black theme fan myself

but you should make it more colourful for an Everquest theme.. teabag grain scroll colours for the startmenu etc.

Just some ideas

Keep up the Great work TheDreamX! :)

Actually, that first pic is from the PocketPC version and doesn't really seem EQ-like anyway. As for your second pic, I am not really trying to emulate the alternate old-style EQ interface. I'm trying to copy the newer interface, as seen below.

I actually redid parts of the start menu, but darker. I love your idea of the teabag scroll colors a lot better. I think I'll try to encorporate that instead. I would be uploading some more pics of windows now, but it turned out to ba a harder task than I thought. Expect an update by the end of the weekend.

EDIT: Figured I would show some of my l33t skills before the night is up. Still working on irt, so be nice...

Alright everyone, I'm back. Was off the scene for a little while because it's been such a hectic week. Anyway, as for Nuroticat's comment about the start menu, I completely agree. The button I made to match every other button just doesn't work for being "the" button. I will try to work on it some more.

    • A coalition of publishers sued OpenAI and Microsoft over scraping content without consent by Hamid Ganji Image via Depositphotos.com AI companies often rely on readily available internet content to train their chatbots and provide users with instant answers. This method of AI training is fast and relatively inexpensive, but using a website’s content without permission or compensation is not something publishers like to see, and this is exactly why Microsoft and OpenAI are now being sued. As reported by Bloomberg, a group of publishers that collectively own nearly 400 newspapers has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft. The coalition argues that the two companies scraped their content to build AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Copilot without paying any compensation. The complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, argues that while AI products have generated billions of dollars in market value using publishers’ work, none of that value has been shared with the publishers. The plaintiffs are seeking statutory damages and injunctive relief for alleged copyright infringement and violations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. “Defendants systematically and secretly crawled the Publishers’ websites—including content behind paywalls and other access restrictions—and copied the Publishers’ articles, stories, and other original works onto their own servers without authorization,” the complaint states. The publishers also described the AI boom as a “death knell for local journalism” if AI companies that scrape content for free are not held accountable. Former New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin and his law firm, Platkin LLP, are representing the publishers. “Our models empower innovation, are trained on publicly available data, and are grounded in fair use,” OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri told Bloomberg. This is not the first lawsuit involving the unauthorized use of publishers’ content by AI firms, but it is one of the largest coalitions ever formed against the free use of content by AI chatbots. In 2024, OpenAI and Microsoft also faced a similar lawsuit from eight newspapers that claimed AI products were benefiting from their content without permission.
