mount: /dev/fd0 is not a valid block device

LOL! That's so wrong :| I suggest you read about mount and google supermount.

Did you try to see if mtools worked?

Also, if you are unsure if the physical drive may be bad - or if it is the configuration, try boting with Knoppix (which I know will work with the floppy) to make sure the drive does work.
